Thimble Cafe - Ottawa
Thimble Cafe
Description
A cozy and inviting cafe with a mismatched decor that may remind some of the 70's. While the food received mixed reviews, the coffee was consistently praised. Limited menu but good for a quick lunch. Offers a range of options including gluten-free, vegan, and nut-free treats. Dog-friendly but may be a concern for some due to hygiene. Excellent customer service and friendly staff. Recommended for coffee and snacks, with fair prices and a loyal customer scheme. Great find for those looking for a unique and inviting spot, while some suggest improvements in the food quality.

Many choices but not great latte and rather pricy. I guess it is expected but not really sure it's worth the premium. Not the best service but the cinnamon brioche was tasty.
I found this place through a friend. The decor is a mismatch of furniture without real definite style. If you are like me a child of the 70's, this will feel very familiar. Montreal once upon a time was full of these little peudo-boho restaurants and in a world of Star Bucks and Second Cup, this should be a welcome addition. The problem is that it does not really live up to the expectations. The staff, young and inexperienced tried very hard to make it right, but the thing is, mediocre food not matter what will remain as such until someone who can actually cook gets involved. My sandwich was actually good, but very overpriced. My friend meal however left a lot to be desired. A quiche under not circumstance should be liquid and the crust should be pre-baked and dry to accommodate the liquid mix and prevent the dish from becoming soggy. Half cooked egg mix can be dangerous and potentially lethal for the person who eats it. Once the problem was raised and after the young waitress tried to argue that this is the way it should be, the dish was replaced and prepared (except for the crust that still looked quite pale) to an edible condition. I ordered a cup cake, which was very pretty. Again, this is an interesting situation. A cup cake should be moist and airy, and flavourful, not too sweet so you can actually taste the cake. It is not easy to accomplish because of the smaller size of the cake, too much flour will make it too dense, and this was one of the problem. The second was the flavour of the icing, or lack of flavour. In their defence, the coffee was excellent, as it should be, since this is a coffee shop. Would I recommend this restaurant, for coffee, yes! for a meal, definitely not.
Good little place for lunch but very limited menu. I relied on their website menu before visiting, but found that none of the items were being served that day, which was disappointing. However, they were willing to alter my order to accommodate me. The berry iced tea was very weak on flavour.
