A heads-up: J:Unique is quite small and doesn’t accept reservations, so plan to arrive early or take your chances if you decide to visit on a busy weekend night. As for vegetarian options, there are several appetizer rolls available that cater to meat-free diners. I particularly recommend the mango special roll! Regarding accessibility, the restaurant has a nice outdoor patio for pleasant weather, but unfortunately, the interior is not wheelchair accessible due to stairs leading up to the entrance without a ramp.
After hearing countless friends praise this restaurant, I finally had the opportunity to visit, and I'm so glad I did. In fact, I've already been back three times in the past two weeks because I’m officially hooked! The sushi is incredible, and the warm, friendly service elevates the entire experience. I will definitely be returning frequently. If you haven't had the chance to try it yet and you love sushi, you absolutely must! Every item on the menu is delicious, but my top picks are the Yummy Yummy and the Big Boss. You truly can’t go wrong with any of their dishes!
I tried several of the special maki rolls, and they had flavors I never would have thought to combine. However, they aren't the traditional rolls you usually find at sushi restaurants. I'm somewhat ambivalent about them; the sauce was very rich and overwhelming, which left me feeling uneasy for an entire day. It got to the point where I don't even want to visit a sushi restaurant for a while. While it was definitely an interesting experience, it just didn't align with my personal taste.
I've tried almost all the special rolls at J:unique, and I can confidently say that their rolls are some of the best in Ottawa! I truly love this sushi bar!
This restaurant is outstanding—definitely some of the best sushi I've had in Ottawa, which is high praise coming from someone from Vancouver. I usually prefer sashimi, and I was impressed by how much firmer and fresher it was compared to many other places I've visited. It's evident that they take great care in preparing their food; the fish is expertly sliced, and the thickness is just right, almost like little steaks as it should be. Initially, the prices might seem a bit high, but you truly get what you pay for. You'll discover that you need only about half the portions compared to other restaurants, as they don't serve it super thin. If you're fed up with mediocre sushi, I highly recommend checking this place out.
