Half Shell - ORANGE BEACH
Half Shell
Description
Perched on the waterfront, this popular spot pairs scenic outdoor seating and live music with a strong brunch program, clearly labeled gluten-free options, skilled bartenders and standout raw oysters. Service is friendly and celebratory touches are common, and happy hour/cocktails keep the atmosphere lively. Expect weekend waits—reservations recommended—and occasional inconsistencies with cooked seafood (some items can be dry or overcooked). Overall, a festive, crowd-pleasing choice for groups, brunch-goers and special occasions.
Feedback
I visit this restaurant every time I'm in town. I really appreciate the outdoor seating that offers a nice view. The gluten-free options on the menu are clearly indicated. The brunch is fantastic, whether you choose items from the menu or enjoy the buffet. Plus, the happy hour specials are a great value!
I encountered the most delicious oysters I've ever tasted. The view and atmosphere were delightful, and watching the boats pass by while a great blue heron graced the scene made my birthday extra special. I even received a complimentary vanilla cupcake, which was wonderful! However, the fresh catch of the day was a bit too dry, and the shrimp in my pasta was overcooked and lacking in flavor.
Well worth the wait! We went on a Saturday night and had a 2 hour wait for our party of 7. We sat outside, listened to the awesome band, and drank some amazing drinks with fantastic service! Kyle was our server inside when we got our table and he was fantastic!
We chose Cobalt based on the reviews we read, and it did not disappoint. I highly recommend making a reservation, as we had to wait an hour after walking in. However, the bartenders are skilled and crafted an excellent old-fashioned and margarita, making our wait enjoyable. The raw oysters were the best I've ever had. While we waited, a woman mentioned that another restaurant in the area is ranked #1 for oysters, with Cobalt in second place. We decided to try that other place the next day, but they couldn't compare to the oysters at Cobalt—these were truly outstanding. The swordfish was great too, although it was slightly overcooked. I also tried the combination oysters, which included Garlic Parmesan, Creole Casino, and Rockefeller. While they weren't quite as amazing as the fresh oysters, they were still excellent and worth ordering again. We will definitely be coming back.
This is undoubtedly the best restaurant we've visited in Gulf Shores/Orange Beach! The wedge salad my husband ordered was the best we've ever had. The Firecracker Shrimp appetizer was also fantastic. For his main dish, my husband chose the Shrimp Fra Diavolo, while I had the Shrimp and Grits along with a side of Parmesan Risotto. Both meals were excellent, and my risotto was simply amazing! Even though I preferred to sit outside, my husband opted for an indoor table because of the heat. However, the outdoor patio is stunning! We went around midday, so it wasn't crowded yet. I loved being able to watch the boats and pelicans—it creates such a lovely atmosphere! I would definitely recommend this place!
