My husband and I are travelling with my 84 year old father, visiting places my mother and father fell in love with back in their big trip to France in the 1980s that they scrimped and saved to make happen. Nice had good memories for dad, and though the city has changed a little bit, the people are just as lovely as he remembered and the food is every bit as wonderful. And that brings us to Au Grill d'Or. We had heard good things about this neighborhood restaurant, famous for its pizza and warm and inviting ambience, and it did not disappoint. The co owner of this family run business warmly greeted us and got us settled, giving us time to study the wonderful menu. I chose a classic Salade Niçoise and a personal sized Pizza Chorizo, plus a half liter glass of a very nice blonde beer. Dad chose a Pizza Italienne, and the husband chose Pizza la Reine. Naturally, we shared everything, including the salad. The salad was a nice portion of tuna, light oil and vinegar dressing, tomatoes that still tasted like fresh sunshine and the warm air from the sea, tasty anchovies, fresh hard boiled eggs, olives, and a nice mix of greens as a bed. A great starter. We watched the pizza chef making our pizzas and putting them in the impressive glazed brick open flame oven while we enjoyed the salad. The pizzas arrived together. The crust was thin and crispy with just the right amount of char, the edges strong enough to hold up a slice but not so doughy that it becomes too much to balance the flavors. Toppings were generous and the ingredients fresh, the cheese was very high quality with rich flavor, and the owner also brought a bottle of homemade pepper seed infused olive oil with bay leaf to drizzle over for a little extra kick. Great stuff! It's rare to find a pizza of this quality in the USA maybe a few spots in NYC, or San Francisco. This was about on par with the best of the places I know of in Berkeley and San Francisco, though the selection of ingredients and the care put into each pie really make this place special. While we enjoyed our meals, local families from the neighborhood continued to stream in, filling tables, greeting each other, and adding to the great vibe. It's worth noting that besides pizza and salads, there are many other dishes to choose from , including fish and pasta, and steak. The dessert menu is a wonderful selection of glaces and local paired digestifs. Though we were already full, how could we say no to limoncello, which I think was house made and very yummy. Go! You must! And you will not be disappointed. And in the event you ordered too much, they have pizza boxes to take home the rest and enjoy it later. If we come back to Nice someday, and I very much hope we do, we will pay another visit, maybe bringing friends along to share in the experience.
