After placing my order the ba... read more As someone who has sold, cooked and eaten bagels in New York for over 45 years I was excited to see this shop while visiting Nice. After placing my order the bagel was immediately put into the toaster without my being asked. Upon seeing this...I asked that it be taken out and and I was told that it would be hard without toasting. That should have alerted me to what was to come. I asked that it only be toasted lightly (due to dental problems causing difficulty eating hard, crunchy bread). I had ordered Lotus/Speculoos spread. I watched as the young lady scraped the bottom of the jar with a knife to get the last dregs out. Again, that should have alerted me. When I received my order it was nicely wrapped and bagged. Upon taking it out of the bag I was pleased to see that it had been cut through the wrapper, meaning it was less likely to drip melted Lotus as I ate. That was to be my last pleasant thought. Upon biting into the bagel my first impression was of the hard and very dry consistency of the quite stale bagel. No amount of toasting would have covered up how old this bagel was. As I had ordered the smaller of the two bagel sizes I thought maybe they do not sell as many of that size so have more left at the end of a business day and save them to sell the next day. The problem with that idea is that I have never encountered an uncut day-old bagel as stale as mine was. Once I was able to get past that thought I realised how thinly the spread had been placed on my bagel. While I do not enjoy inches of filling I also do not expect to find the filling scraped onto the surface, which is what this was. I often deconstruct a bagel and eat the top and bottom separately. I would have been unable to do so with this bagel as there was not enough spread to cover. Overall I was greatly disappointed with my purchase and was astounded when I saw the wonderful reviews written here. Had I not been heading for a train I would have returned to the shop and asked for a refund. As a bagel lover I was excited to find this establishment and would have gone every morning but after this experience I will never return. Good luck if you do venture in. When bagels are good they are very good so enjoy if you are fortunate enough to get a fresh one.
