They have a special at the moment tacos for 3 dollars. Tried one of each sans the vegetarian option. All of them came in a grainy taco soft wrapping pretty small (7cm diameter). My favourites were the pork and the fish. Restaurant was a bit dark but seemed like a good atmosphere to grab a bite and unwind. View all feedback.
What Теохар Червенкова doesn't like about Calaveras Mexican Cantina & Tequila Bar:
Found the atmosphere to be cool. Decent drinks. Myself and a few friends ordered the enchiladas Rojas. They looked nice but tasted like dog food. I thought it was just me but the others disliked it too. The serving size was too small but perhaps that is for the best. Disappointing. View all feedback.
Calaveras has a great ambience. So gorgeous on the inside but the food is actually appalling. Enchiladas are bland, four people on my table didn't finish their's. Pretty sure the chicken is the one from the tin. So shocked at how bad the food is... such a shame
I tend to love the vibe and decor at Mexican restaurants. They are usually colourful, with a bar-like, fun atmosphere. Calaveras was no different. Great place for drinks and winding down after a long week. To share, we ordered the guacamole, some tacos and the beef fajita. Guacamole was fresh and a great starter. I would have happily eaten a whole serving (or 2) on my own. The plates of tacos came next, with a mix of pulled pork, chicken and fish; and I couldn't help notice that the tacos were very small. Anyway, taste wise, they were decent, but were not excellent either. They all seemed to taste the same from the red sauce. They were spicy, but lacked those Mexican flavours i was after. The beef strips for the fajitas came out over some rice + 3 tortillas to the side (what's with restaurants serving food in odd numbers). Fajita was ok, spicy as well, though i didn't like the beef strips being cut too fine. They reminded me of mince and looked rather cheap. Right now, i would prefer to come here for drinks and just snacking on some food (pre-dinner), but with some tweaks to the menu, they can get people to stay for a proper dinner and order more food.

C A L A V E R A S This place has such potential as the atmosphere is pretty funky. However, they need to improve on the service and quality of the food asap. ✌@foodiesguidetosydney
Been here twice. First time was decent, second time was appalling. Atmosphere: great decor, ornamental skulls, sombreros, tap water served in tequila bottles - overall awesome Food: nice plating, great tasting, small servings. Price: what you'd expect at a typical place in Newtown - not too pricey, but not the cheapest Now the waiting time and service - well that was disappointing for me. Generally I'd expect to wait 20 mins max for food to come out. First time it was so. Second time we waited 40 minutes, food hadn't come yet. I ordered a starter dish, I pointed to it on the menu, read it aloud, and asked to clarify "will the feta be sprinkled on top of the beans". After all that, I was disappointed to know that the waitress got it wrong. I had somewhere to go right after dinner and I was under the impression I only had to wait 20 mins. Unfortunately my dish was not ready and I had to leave. I asked to doggie bag it and pay, and unfortunately they informed me that I can't do that. I feel like this is a hit and miss situation, but to have to wait 40 minutes for a small starter dish - don't think I'll be coming back here.
