I was really disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. I ordered tea and a scone, and when I asked for the bill, it was placed in my hand with the card machine by the assistant. After paying, I noticed that I was charged £7.00 for 2 teas and £4.75 for 1 cheese scone, with an additional 10% service charge added. The total came to £12.93 for just 1 scone and 2 teas. I have visited many tea houses in Northumberland and have never paid such high prices or been forced to pay a service charge. I was not given the option to decline the service charge, and I even later discovered that the cheese scone was advertised on the menu for £3.50, not £4.75 as I was charged. I felt like I was being taken advantage of and will not be returning to this restaurant.
Absolutely horrendous, welcome from one sales advisor she just said All right and then nobody approach us to welcome to the store. Been customers since buying from Teeside store and bought lots from Newcastle too....

The staff was unfriendly and did not smile, which made me feel unwelcome. The cooked breakfast was below par - the eggs were uncooked, the beans were too herby, and there was unwanted salsa on the plate. The amount of sausage and black pudding was also very small. Considering the overall cost, I would not return to this restaurant.
I recently visited Barker and Stonehouse's new location in the Metro Centre Gateshead. The cafe looked impressive, so my companion and I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, our experience went downhill from there. We ordered two toasted cheese scones and coffee, but they arrived untoasted with a waitress who seemed quite unhappy about it. After they were sent back to be toasted, they were finally okay. The waitress continued to display unhappiness and simply said "enjoy" when serving us. To our surprise, the bill came to £17.50 for two coffees and two scones, including a 10% surcharge that was added without our consent. Overall, the meal was overpriced for what we received, and the negative attitude of the waitress further dampened our experience. We will not be returning to this establishment.
