Contribute FeedbackSouth Bay offers a mixed dining experience, with some dishes lacking flavor while others shine. Standouts include the Chicken Scarpiello and some tapas offerings. However, some dishes, like the paella and organic salmon, fell short. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere with friendly staff, although seating can be cramped and noise levels high. While the food can be hit or miss, South Bay remains a popular spot in downtown New Haven, especially for pre-theatre dining. Overall, the experience varies, with some guests enjoying the food and service while others find it lacking.
We had dinner at this restaurant before heading to a show at the Shubert (starting at 7:30). Our reservation was at 6, and we arrived at 6:03 and were promptly seated in the bar area. It was quite crowded and noisy, with tables close together and a tight space for the servers to navigate. We were given water right away, but our server took some time to come to our table. After ordering our food and drinks, there was a slight delay. However, our drinks arrived quickly and our food came out around 6:40, which was surprisingly fast. We finished eating before 7, but had to wait for our server to bring the bill. She dropped it off at 7:05, but didn't wait for my card. Fortunately, a member of our party paid since our server was not around by 7:15. In the past, we had no issues at Villa Lulu or Pacifico before shows, despite noting that in our reservation. The food was excellent, especially the beef dishes. Although the server mentioned providing steak knives, she never did, but the meat was tender enough to be cut with butter knives. I would consider returning, perhaps earlier in the evening or on a non-show night, and request a table in a quieter area at the back of the restaurant.
Our experience at the restaurant was absolutely flawless. We adored the prosciutto and fig appetizer, as well as the halibut entree. I cannot sing the praises of this place enough. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
My partner and I went to New Haven Restaurant Week for dinner. The food was delicious. Despite requesting a regular table for my reservation, we were seated at a high top table instead. This made it uncomfortable for my girlfriend, who is short, to get in and out of the chairs. I was disappointed by the mix-up and not being able to have a standard table even with a reservation.
I and a couple of my friends went here for dinner during New Haven's Restaurant Week. It was our first time there and everything was wonderful! The food was delicious and the portion size was reasonable. The waitstaff were attentive and friendly. The ambiance was nice, not too casual and not too stuffy. We were comfortable there. We will be back!
We went on a Monday of restaurant week. Service food and drinks were all excellent. Our first time there. We sat outside on a lovely Spring evening. Lots of city happenings, motorcycles, marching band, radios. Inspired drink offerings. Happy we were able to partake of the good food and service.
