Nestled in the heart of Muncie, this vibrant restaurant strikes an appealing balance between a laid-back atmosphere and a diverse menu. Diners rave about the standout black bean burger and unique offerings like the PB&J burger and scrumptious pimento cheese tater tots. While some appetizers and sides may underwhelm, the overall culinary experience is marked by well-seasoned burgers and excellent craft beers. Service is generally friendly, with standout staff ensuring a pleasant dining experience. From unexpected popcorn starters to indulgent milkshakes, the value is unbeatable, making it a go-to spot for both casual outings and special occasions.

Ryder was our server and ensured that we were well taken care of. We were on our way back to Texas and stopped for a quick meal. The atmosphere was very pleasant. I would definitely visit again.

As for parking, there's a small lot right behind Roots.

Upon being seated, we were greeted with a steel bucket of popcorn — an unexpected but delicious treat. The menu was well-organized, clearly outlining the ingredients in each dish. They also have a wide selection of craft and microbrews, featuring many options from local and regional breweries, as well as some popular commercial beers. I highly recommend trying the People’s Boiler Black, which has a rich coffee and chocolate flavor, though it’s lighter than a stout. We decided to start off with some appetizers, and I cannot stress enough how fantastic they were — don’t miss the pimento tater tots, which were outstanding, and the portions were more than enough to share. For our main courses, we split two burgers: the PB&J and the Trippin Timmy mushroom. All their burgers are prepared in a smash style, resulting in a thinner patty with crispy edges and cooked to medium well. This isn’t my personal preference for burgers, but it’s how they serve them. The PB&J burger featured a great balance of peanut butter and jelly, complemented by smoky bacon and a surprising kick from jalapeños — it sounds unconventional, but it worked perfectly! The Trippin Timmy was loaded with mushrooms and grilled onions, making it a more traditional choice. Both burgers were delicious. We also ordered some tots and their cucumber and tomato salad. While all the sides were tasty, I should note that the cucumber and tomato salad was cut quite thick. For dessert, we indulged in the brownie batter milkshake and the flavor of the month shake: Pineapple Upside Down Cake, both recommended by our waitress. They were served in mason jars, accompanied by the shake canister with the remaining shake and a long spoon. Both shakes were delightful, with rich brownie chunks mixed with thick batter ribbons, and the pineapple shake came topped with a mini shortcake and pineapple. Our waitress was training a new employee, but both women were friendly, professional, and provided excellent recommendations while keeping our iced tea filled. With an appetizer, a pint of beer, two burger meals, and two large milkshakes, our total came to about $70. This is comparable to what we would spend at chain restaurants like Applebee’s or Red Robin, but everything at Roots was significantly better.
