A friend and I were traveling through the region, and stayed in Montefusco for a week. With only two restaurants, we initially felt limited...but we soon learned they were two excellent restaurants (Da Teodoro and Beatrice), both warm and personable, with excellent regional cuisine and wine, and they treated us like welcomed guests. We fell in love with this charming town and these local restaurants. Wonderful food--I had a mushroom pizza that I'd rate as my favorite pizza ever--paired with local wines and staff that was willing to cobble together their English with our Italian so we could communicate. I'd highly recommend a visit to Montefusco and a meal at Da Teodoro.
The province of Avellino is a hilly and mountainous one, where a wide range of mushrooms can be found. It is also a more carnivorous province, compared to the coast of Naples and Salerno. Here in Montefusco, a beautiful medieval burg on top of one of these hills, you can taste the wonders of the local cuisine. We had the Pappardelle with Porcini mushrooms and black truffle... and they were so elegant and delicious I would gladly come back to Da Teodoro. Then we had the grilled lamb, which was also amazing. Very well cooked (you can always tell since the fat of a good grilled lamb is simply delicious). The desserts were also very good, with lots of almonds, hazelnuts, and cheese. This place is a must if you are around.
We had dinner one our last night in Italy and Da Teodoro was great. We had the mixed appetizer plate and it was enough for a meal! The zuppa was excellent! My husband has a pizza and I enjoyed pasta with mushrooms and we highly recommend both. Excellent wine list. Although we were English speaking visitors they did an excellent job communicating with us and making us feel very welcome. We had a table next to the fireplace with a view which was lovely on a cold rainy night. Highly recommend!!
There are places that aren't just restaurants, but beautiful breaks in the day. Teodoro was like that for me. I arrived almost by chance and found myself in a truly welcoming place: the windows open onto the greenery, the light, that sense of space that makes you slow down without realizing it. The food follows the same lines: essential, authentic, sincere. A mozzarella that needs no explanation, a prosciutto that speaks for itself, a meat that tastes of true quality. It's not just eating, it's feeling that what's on your plate has been carefully chosen. But what struck me most was the human touch. Attentive, attentive, but above all honest service. In an age when they often push you to add, someone here stopped and told me, simply, that would be enough. It's a small gesture, but it says it all. Fair prices, a clean, unforced experience. I left with a simple feeling: I'll be back. Because when a place makes you feel good, you recognize it immediately.
