As a resident of the Icon, I usually only eat here when I'm by the pool, and that's where this story begins. The service was incredibly slow. After receiving a menu by the pool, I had to get up and place my order inside because no one had come by yet. Then, after waiting 20 minutes outside for my food, I had to go inside twice to ask about it, only to find it sitting on the counter and had to pick it up myself. The food was good, though I ordered the spicy edamame, which wasn’t spicy at all but still tasty. We waited a long time for the bill, which never arrived. When I went inside to pay, I was told they were closed. Seriously? This experience was frustrating, but since I live here, I’m not one to rush. Luckily, Victor, the manager, was present. When I explained what happened, he seemed as confused as we were. He asked us to wait while he looked into it, then returned to explain that because the servers knew how poor the experience was, they decided to comp us but never informed us—much like they never got around to serving us properly. Victor was extremely apologetic, comped our meal, and even gave us a free drink at 15 Kitchen and Vine. While the service was disappointing, I was very impressed with the manager’s quick response and how well he handled the situation. I initially rated them three stars, but because of Victor’s efforts, I updated my review. So if you find yourself starving after ordering here, just ask for Victor. He’s clearly the only one who cares.
Café Icon is currently closed indefinitely, seemingly due to the W Hotel's takeover of the former Viceroy Hotel and ongoing pool construction. It's a shame, as it was a great spot to enjoy lunch by the pool.
