Reviews - La Camera Southgate
Reviews summary
La Camera is a well-known Italian restaurant located along the Yarra River in Melbourne, offering a cozy ambiance with excellent views. While some reviewers have experienced disappointing meals with overcooked or tasteless dishes, others have praised the friendly service and delicious food options. Highlights include the 8-hour slow-cooked ox cheek, perfectly cooked paella, and highly recommended pork belly. Those looking to dine before a show at the Melbourne Recital Centre may find this to be a convenient choice. Overall, La Camera seems to have mixed reviews, with some diners eager to return for another visit while others will not be back due to deteriorating food quality and increased prices.

What Heather Goodwin dislikes about La Camera Southgate:
Hopefully this was a one off evening as previously we have found La Camera quite satisfactory. On entry the staff were enduring all patrons were registering on the Covid app. This was an excellent start. From the outset we informed the staff that we had...a deadline for a theatre . This did not phase the friendly and helpful staff. However, perhaps the tight timetable caused some shortcuts. The Chicken Parmigiana, an... View all feedback.

My husband and l dined there for lunch today. A grey, wet day outside but once inside and seated we were looked after by the friendly staff so well. The food was quite lovely, we will be returning.

The service was excellent, the wine selection was great, and the food was delicious. We didn't reserve a table by the windows, but the atmosphere was still enjoyable. Because of my recent ankle surgery, my mobility was limited and a staff member greatly assisted us by guiding us to the closest Uber pick-up spot. Despite being gluten and dairy free, I had plenty of options to choose from. I highly recommend this restaurant!
Our first dinner in Melbourne was at an Italian restaurant located on the second level of Riverside Quay. The first level housed a food hall with various stations like Subway and Chatime. We ordered a pizza topped with salami and Italian sausages, as well as a bowl of stir-fried green beans with zucchini. Unfortunately, the veggies were too salty. The pizza was served unsliced, so we had to cut it ourselves. It was placed on a small round plate, despite being oval-shaped, which we found a bit odd. It seems like this is the Australian style of pizza.
It has been a while since I dined at Southbank. Returning to this restaurant brought back fond memories of both successful and leisurely meals enjoyed with a view of the Yarra River. The Linguine alla Pescatora was outstanding - the pasta cooked perfectly and the seafood mix was just right. The selection of Italian and Australian wines complemented the food nicely. I look forward to returning with either clients or friends. It is wonderful to see that high-quality, reasonably priced restaurants are thriving in Southbank.
The spaghetti puttanesca was sadly, a joke. It was a bunch of spaghetti tossed around in copious amounts of oil with diced olives and tomatoes that looked like they were straight from a Subway salad bar. There were pools of oil at the bottom of the dish. To charge restaurant prices for that is a disgrace to the Italian community of Melbourne. Learn how to make proper Italian food or adjust your prices accordingly, or better yet, just stop altogether. My advice to punters don't bother with this joint unless you want to be severely disappointed.
Full Disclosure: we came here for a team dinner as our boss is close friends with the owner. But don 't think this affects my review: all opinions are my own, and we all had our hearts originally set on a different venue. I 'm glad we decided (read: had no choice) to eat here instead. We started with garlic bread, which smelled and tasted incredible, although I prefer my garlic bread to be on a baguette or ciabatta loaf rather than a pizza base. Next up was the antipasti platters, with plenty of cured meats (salami, prosciutto), marinated olives, grilled capsicum and eggplant and deep fried gnocchi to share. The eggplant was a particular standout, with notes of basil and an almost creamy texture. I ordered the rib eye steak with greens, and both were perfect. The zucchini and beans were buttery and perfectly blanched; a lovely shade of green with the perfect crunch. The steak was cooked perfectly medium not too **** and not overdone and was all kinds of flavour some. I ordered the jus, which I enjoyed as I love to smother my steak in sauce, but it would have been excellent without. We sat on the balcony in the middle of winter and didn 't freeze to death thanks to the heating and the plastic tarp protecting the view and the customers (alright so the wine probably helped me forget about the weather). All in all a great spot for excellent Italian food particularly large groups. Bonus points if your boss is paying.

Firstly, the food was incredible. I think It's hard to have dinner at a place where you would rate every single course of the night 5 stars, but the pizza and lasagne were excellent, and the dessert, tiramasu and gelati were perfect . Servers were friendly and quick, meal arrived to us within 10-15 minutes of ordering (on a Wednesday night), and the atmosphere was cool and quiet, we had the fortune of a nice well lit window seat. I'll be coming back for my Mum's birthday as a nice surprise for her.
Love the view, the food, the friendly staff, but the thing is that the sparkling water is waayyy to expensive, 10$ for just 1 few hundred ml bottle. Service: Dine in Meal type: Lunch Price per person: A$40–60 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4 Recommended dishes: Pizza Prosciutto
What a fantastic restaurant! Our family of 6 had a lovely meal over looking the river; food was fabulous (and dessert was stunning), and the atmosphere was great! Karen served us and was outstanding; offering suggestions and recommendations. Thanks for a lovely night; we’ll be back. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner
My experience at La Camera Southgate this evening was overshadowed by a troubling incident. The waiter added a large tip to my bill without my knowledge or consent. This lack of honesty is unacceptable and left me feeling deceived. I urge others to be cautious about the practices at this restaurant. Until this matter is resolved, I cannot recommend dining here.

Nice place to eat in Melbourne. Paul is one of the best hosts we ever had. A fabulous place to eat. The food was great.
Last minute find. 16 people and was accommodated with ease. Service was impeccable. Food even better. Had some sort of pesto with Italian sausage dish, sorry can remember the name, but was perfect!. Drinks and cocktails on point. Atmosphere was great. Happy we found it. Highly recommended!!!
