School House Cafe - McGregor
School House Cafe
Description
Nestled in a charming setting adorned with antiques, this small café has garnered mixed reviews. Patrons appreciate the inviting atmosphere and generous portions, particularly enjoying standout items like the chicken salad sandwich and giant pancakes. However, several diners have reported lackluster food quality, such as greasy ham and undercooked hash browns, alongside frustratingly slow service. While many have fond memories and continue to return, others express disappointment, citing health concerns regarding silverware cleanliness and poor meal preparation. Overall, the café offers promise, but inconsistency in both food and service may deter some from returning.

As you enter the restaurant, you might expect it to be larger inside. The atmosphere is lively, with plenty of interesting decor to enjoy, but it was quite crowded, making it difficult to navigate through the space.
This place is my favorite of all time!! The main cook makes the best chicken salad sandwich. I could eat a whole loaf of that sweet rye bread. They are struggling with young staff like most people but any inconveniences is totally worth it!!! You always get large portions here! Stopping here is a must for me whenever I am driving through even if it isn't a meal time. Dietary restrictions: Very accommodating with gluten free options!
We really were looking forward to stopping here but the caramel roll we got was raw in the middle and the latte we got tasted like just milk. There was maybe one shot of espresso in the large latte.
This is a charming little place on first glance; with interesting antiques hung aboutt. Too bad the food is mediocre at best. The ham served had bones and loaded with large hunks of fat. The hash Browns were barely cooked, almost raw with no crispiness. The cheese is American processed. Overall, the meal was quite disappointing, especially when you know Pallisade cafe serves a far superior breakfast that is more reasonably priced. The service was equally mediocre. The waitress delivered our check without taking a few seconds to inquire how we liked our breakfast. We will not return.
We have enjoyed coming here on our way thru for years. Brought our daughter and son in law from New Mexico 2 yrs ago. Daughter told us he still talks about this place. They are coming again this summer. We stopped this morning, waited almost an hour for food. Coffee refill was a challenge to get! Hash browns were crusty and almost cooked beyond, ham in the omelette was all grizzle, an over, over abundance of cheese. Too bad!! Can honestly say we won't stop again!! Our stop last year was debatable, this year was it!!
