Reviews summary
Nestled in Mason's Hofplatz, this family-run lunch spot earns praise for fresh, scratch-made dishes—from a standout goat-cheese sandwich and chef salads to German sausages, burgers, soups and house-baked cakes—offered at reasonable $10–$20 prices. Service is often friendly and attentive, and takeout is available, but experiences vary: occasional slow or inattentive servers, understaffing, and a few reports of dry meat or missing menu items temper the otherwise warm, inviting atmosphere. Overall a popular, good-value destination with memorable desserts and daily specials, ideal for locals and visitors seeking homestyle fare.

What Alice Jaeb dislikes about Square Plate:
We were quite disappointed with our visit. Our waitress mentioned that there is new management, so we hope things will improve. Unfortunately, the food lacked flavor and seemed hastily prepared. Given the glowing reviews we've seen, we were really surprised by our experience! View all feedback.

We had an excellent, healthy, and quick lunch here. I only wish we could find places like this during our travels. I had dietary restrictions and was looking for a good chicken salad, and I got just that with cabbage. The cheesecake was also fantastic!

A lovely young woman in an apron, whom I suspected was the owner, came over to ask about my meal. I found myself at a loss for words, struggling to convey just how amazing my dish was. In the end, I could only muster a simple "delicious." I definitely plan to return soon to try the other daily specials—if they’re anything like this one, I know I’ll be in for a treat!
The staff and customers were constantly staring at us with hateful looks the meat in our food tasted dry and over cooked. Only one waitress was seemingly friendly and cordial towards us.
Quiet, plenty of seating, variety on menu was wonderful! Wanted the chicken salad stiff Avocado but they were out, our very bright friendly server Ashley suggested tuna salad it was delicious. My mother in law took us here for lunch on Saturday. What a great place. The servers we friendly and prompt. The food was truly wonderful. I got a cheeseburger, and it was one of the best cheeseburgers I’ve had. I got the potato salad as a side, and it was just fantastic. Others in our party got the pork special and one got an Asian salad, everyone raved about their mean. These folks have something very special here. Great little place, the burger was delicious . The bun was fresh and just slightly sweet. I had pepperworst and sauerkraut as well. I would definitely eat them both again.
I had a lovely Friday lunch at this bustling restaurant located in Hofplatz, Mason. They serve a selection of German cuisine as well as classic options like hamburgers and salads. I opted for the German taco, which was delightful, while others at my table enjoyed sandwiches, salads, and German sausage plates. The food was delicious, and the prices were very reasonable. The service was friendly and adequate. They also have a variety of freshly baked goods, and I couldn't resist trying the Bourbon Pecan cake—it was absolutely delicious! This place appears to be a popular spot for lunch, and they offer takeout as well.
The food was perfect. The ambience is pure small town of Hill Country. Lunch, but don't wait for a table. I had the reuben sandwich and my wife had filled the chicken salad avocado, both were great!
We visited first because we have a new friend here in Mason, who has worked here for a while. And second because they have turkey and dressing on Fridays. We had a horrible experience at cracker barrel for Thanksgiving Thursday and decided to make up for it we would have a real meal on Friday. The only thing I didn't like was our server. She was not very attentive. My husband ordered first and then I said I'll have the same thing but add the soup of the day. She brought us 1 turkey plate and for me she brought out some type of chicken salad. When I told her I wanted the same thing again she took the plate and I could hear her talking to a manager and told him that I didn't know what I wanted and it wasn't her fault, but it was. My meal came out shortly after and we ate and enjoyed immensely. I even got a key lime pie to go and it was delicious, the flaky crust was a nice change from the normal grahm crust..
This cozy little restaurant in the peaceful town of Mason was fantastic. The daily special, Meat Tau, was excellent. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her chicken salad sandwich, and my carving was cooked to perfection. The sausage served with spicy mustard was also delicious. We highly recommend this place if you're in the area!
