The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the food is tasty. However, on our visit on July 8th, 2017, we had dinner and our bill came to $66.97. I paid with my Visa and added a $14.00 tip, which is a 20% gratuity, bringing the total to $80.97. But when I checked my Visa statement, I noticed that the charge was $85.97. It seems that Rebecca, our server, thought she deserved a 28% tip, turning my $14 tip into $19. This was our experience at Birch Lake.
The food isn't particularly impressive, and the beer selection is quite limited. However, in a small town, it's one of the better bars available.
I don’t want to be overly critical of a small, independently owned restaurant, but our recent visit may be our last. We arrived on a Saturday around 2:00 PM for lunch and drinks. Although the place wasn’t crowded, it took over an hour for our food to arrive after we ordered. We only had a black bean salad and some wings. The wings were surprisingly cool, mushy, and gelatinous, almost resembling undercooked food, even though they appeared nearly burnt. As for the salad, it was quite unappetizing, looking like a simple mix of cold canned beans dumped onto iceberg lettuce. We ended up leaving both dishes mostly untouched. Other patrons in the bar were visibly frustrated with the long wait, especially after a to-go order was taken and served before our table’s orders. I’ll give this place two stars solely because the atmosphere was nice, and the bartender/server did a decent job.
