Recommended by the ever-reliable Antonio Bordin, Café Comptoir Abel delivers exactly what a traditional Lyonnais bouchon should: warmth, authenticity, and a deep respect for classic French cuisine. Tucked away like a well-kept secret, the restaurant feels like stepping into a postcard from 19th-century France—wood-paneled walls, vintage charm, and the soft hum of satisfied diners. The poule au riz sauce suprême is a standout, and rightly so—tender chicken in a velvety white sauce that strikes the perfect balance between richness and restraint. It’s comfort food elevated to quiet elegance. Equally impressive is the beef bourguignon, cooked with such patience that the meat practically melts, swimming in a deeply flavorful red wine reduction. The terrine and foie gras are exemplary starters—earthy, smooth, and generously portioned. The foie gras in particular is indulgent without being overwhelming, served simply with toast and a hint of sweetness to complement the richness. To the height of his reputation! Two small flats: a cerbère has the entrance that makes you wait outside, without explanation and without any ampness. And the Côte du Rhône in pot that is really not up to the rest of the meal
This restaurant was highly recommended by a Lyon resident, but unfortunately the chef could not (or did not) want to modify a dish to be sans gluten for me. I was told that everything on the menu contained flour, and because I was here with work colleagues, I felt a bit stuck eating here. So I asked if I could have a chicken dish without the flour-based sauce, and what I got was a plain piece of boiled chicken breast/leg and two small boiled carrots. Very disappointing that a renowned chef couldn't take the time to make something more palatable. We were the first party there, so it wasn't even busy.
