Had an early dinner here and was in a hurry as I needed to get to Parc OL to watch Olympique Lyonnais - this was the perfect place to choose. Service was very quick. I had escalope Milanese, which was very tasty and simply done. My wife had magret de canard which she enjoyed very much too. Not Michelin star stuff, but really solid and good value choice. What Zacharie Hoareau doesn't like about Brasserie des Ecoles:
(Apparently) cheap prices for low-quality meals. Meat dishes are nothing of special, but nothing compared to waitresses' politeness. I guess it has been the first time in my life I didn't receive any "bonsoir" when I came in, and any "merci" or "au revoir" when I went out from the restaurant. "Very nice" snorting when I was trying to order my menu in French, even if i don't speak a world. Then, main dishes came before entrées, and we had to put everything on the table although there was no space (bread in our dishes just to fit it in). My girlfriend and me couldn't believe it was seriously happening. Definitely no recommended!.
Try the duck confit. Very very good. Lamb skewers not so much. Neither was the tartare steak. The potatoes dauphinoise were real yummy
Food was ok no better or worse than any other basic French brasserie. Although the bathroom is disgusting and has no seat on the toilet. Also the service here was awful. We waiting at least 10 minutes for menus and for our server to come over (I made eye contact with many people and they just looked at us and didn't come over) and when he did he asked if we were ready to order....we said no because you haven't given us menus...then said oh well my table outside was ready to order right away without a menu. Well good for them. Then we asked for my salad to start...we repeated it a couple times so he understood that it was first (we spoke to him in french btw)....well it still came with my partners main course regardless. So once my salad was done she ate alone and I waited 10 to 15 more minutes for my meal. He brought it...said here sorry and walked away but didn't replace my cutlery...we had to leave our table to find someone for that. Our server was never around. He never asked if we wanted more drinks. Never checked in on us. Our empty plates sat waiting for a really long time before he came back. Was a terrible service experience. French service isn't historically great but this was terrible.
A nice cozy place to have lunch or even tea or hot chocolat! The service is friendly and the food is good, typical french brasserie !
Dropped in for a coffee and a hot chocolate. Took over 15 minutes at a quiet time - she forgot to collect the order. I requested a small cup for a 2 year old (in French), the woman arrived with an inappropriately large cup. Only on further request did she attempt to find a small espresso cup. Asked for the bill but did not arrive 10 minutes later. Very inattentive service and won't be going back to this tourist trap again. Perhaps they rely on their good location on the square.
Nice location. Very cheap but not the best cooked steak I've had. Ordered a rump and the portion of both steak and sides of chips and salad are impressive enough. I just found it very fatty. Had to leave a lot of the fat on the plate. But cannot argue at the price. It did the job and would recommend but if you're wanting your taste buds to be Spoilt then open your wallet and into town. Service was fairly slow too but overall it's a box ticker.
