Husband loves this place and took me for first time today. Excellent staff! So friendly. Ask for a sample of items before you order. Husband had VooDoo chicken and loved it. The food was fresh, however not to my taste. I had the drunken chicken and it was too sweet for me taste, however several other people ordered after me and enjoyed it. Portions are hearty and filling. Husband added shrimp to his VooDoo chicken an... View all feedback.
What Christina Leehan doesn't like about J Gumbo’s:
We wanted to try something new so we ordered takeout food through DoorDash. We typically enjoy Cajun fair, but we’re not impressed with J. Gumbos. We ordered beans and rice, gumbo and bourbon chicken. First issue was that they didn’t put my kids food in the bag, so I can’t comment on the quality of bourbon chicken. The beans and rice and gumbo were somehow very bland. The garlic bread was average Texas toast style br... View all feedback.
I just had my first meal (breakfast) at J Gumbo's after driving by it many years. I purchased a Groupon for $20 worth of food and didn't find anyone who wanted to go to breakfast first thing in the morning so I went alone. I was let in the door prior to 8 am which is their start time and immediately given a nice cup of coffee. I ordered Debbie's Special eggs, corned beef hash, fried potatoes, grits and a bagel (I chose pumpernickel). That was way shy of $20 so I also ordered the Boudreaux Blueberry pancakes and some biscuits and gravy to go for my daughter at home. The meal was spectacular. I was absolutely satisfied with everything served and stuffed to the gills. I actually saved much of the food and ate it the next morning and was satisfied again. Natasha, the waitress is very friendly and observant towards your needs of filling your cup or bringing anything you may wish to have with your dish. Debbie and Bill are great cooks and also personable. Bill gave me a sample Benet which was as good or better than the ones you can eat in New Orleans. I look forward to start eating the lunch and dinner items. I have heard many people say they like J Gumbo's. NOW I do too. Thank you, Marvin for telling me so much about it recently.
Some of the best Cajun food in Louisville. I had the make your own nachos with the drunken chicken so much I couldn't eat it all. My husband had the gumbo. It was very good. And the young lady that waited on us was very friendly. This was the one on Frankford Ave
Visiting Kentucky with friends to get away from our home state for a few days and we decided to try this place since it was a short walk away from our airbnb. First time trying Gumbo and it was delicious! I recommend coming here on Sunday to get the 5 dollar bowls!
J. Gumbo's! Best Cajun food since I was N'orleans! Really is good. And very reasonably priced. Staff is courteous and friendly. Stop in at J. Gumbo's. You will not be disappointed.

The food was fresh, however not to my taste. I had the drunken chicken and it was too sweet for me taste, however several other people ordered after me and enjoyed it. Portions are hearty and filling. Husband added shrimp to his VooDoo chicken and our total including drinks was $24ish. I believe if I go again I will try the Bumblebee, its has more of a rich, savory vegetable flavor that is not too sweet.
