If the black box isn’t part of the experience,... read more Firstly, despite the name, Black Box Coffee serves their coffee in white cups, not black boxes as I had expected. If the black box isn’t part of the experience, why highlight it? During my visit, I didn’t see a single black box—did I miss something? Secondly, the coffee they use is much too light for an espresso; it’s nowhere near as dark as their marketing implies. Thirdly, the Australian barista smelled strongly of tequila around midday on a Sunday. While I support people overcoming addiction, it’s unpleasant when they cough without freshening their breath—though perhaps the mouthwash they use contains alcohol as well. Fourthly, I don’t quite share the hype. There’s too much focus on coffee for my taste, and not enough attention to croissants, pastries, or boxed French cheeses, which are all quite rare on Druid Street. Aside from these points, no complaints—5 stars.
