What Harbhajan Gagrani doesn't like about Bistro 1843:
Although the food was good (for the West Island), we expected something better since there was a 3 month wait for a table. My crab cake was "mushy" and the soup was over salted. The main course was very good, I had the halibut, and the lemon cheesecake was great. There are other restaurants that are just as good or better, with a much shorter wait. It was good, just not amazing. I think the decor needs updating as we... View all feedback.
Named Bistro 1843 to commemorate the year this domain was built – in 1843, this is a simple and unpretentious restaurant with a home like setting. Ample parking, easy to find, this old home has been converted into a restaurant by the young couple who own this place and run it as a restaurant. We were impressed when someone called us back to reassure us that a vegetarian option would be available. All tables were occupied. The guests seemed to be from around the area and were having a wonderful time. No one pushed us to hurry and leave, so I could see guests were relaxed and opening bottle after bottle of wine. The two waitresses were knowledgeable and so efficient. In the middle of the meal, Tarik, the chef, came out to meet the guests, many of whom knew him and obviously came here often. The food was excellent. Tariq, the owner chef, is undoubtedly talented. The toasted bread with soft churned butter was to die for. The vegetarian dish was risotto with mushrooms and truffle oil – definitely the star of the evening. The cod was quite bland, but that’s the nature of a steak like big piece of fish, I guess. There was a choice of four desserts. We ordered one of each, and they were superlative each one better than the last. The only not so nice thing in the entire experience was the bathroom which is in the basement with a long and very steep flight of steps. The prices were reasonable a wonderful feeling as most restaurants have used the Pandemic as an excuse to increase their prices unreasonably high. Our dinner at the Bistro was outstanding. No corners cut, no shortcuts taken. The bring your own wine is the cherry on the cake.
We came for lunch, very warm welcome from the staff, lots of choice and varied and fresh products, it was delicious

There are well over a thousand restaurants in Montreal, and this is currently ranked #2! There are a very few not-so-positive reviews, mostly from four or more years ago. We were a party of 5, covering three generations. We each had a soup or salad, and 5 different main dishes: chicken, lamb, venison, fish, and veal. We tried four different desserts. Everything we sampled was exquisite. Of course a restaurant this good does not come cheap, and the bill, including a tip of 20% came to over $400, but one does not go to a restaurant of this calibre every week. There was no problem with people leaving to have a smoke, as mentioned in one review. The restaurant is not large, but tables were reasonably spaced, and we had no problem conversing. I will always remember this restaurant as one of the best I have ever eaten at, and recommend it unreservedly; just remember that the prices of its dishes match their quality.
