After the toll gate (EUR 7 but every penny worth) the road becomes even narrower until you finally reach a parking lot, from where it is only a short 5 8 minutes walk to the Hochsteinhütte. The view from above is amazing a panorama of the surrounding Dolomites, a view of the entire tiny provincial capital Lienz spreads out in the valley below, and the mountains, the mountains, the mountains, the mountains, the mountains, it's just great up here! The owners are two very nice guys, we really enjoyed chatting with them, the apple strudel with blow (whipped cream) was amazing, they also had carvings, sausages and other hearty Austrian dishes on the menu, the food and hospitality are great. Unfortunately we were there in the middle of the afternoon, so I really couldn't have a liquor, but my only Austrian beer was cold and delicious. There are a variety of beautiful hiking routes that go from here when in the region, this place is absolutely worth the trip up here!!
