Had a lovely lunch at the Oak with some friends a couple of weeks ago. Hadn’t eaten here for a while as the kitchen kept changing but was very pleasantly surprised. Will be back. View all feedback.
What Norbert Hauck doesn't like about Royal Oak Newick:
Very poor food, overpriced, do not eat here. Very clever of the chef to produce chips that are burnt on the outside yet rock hard inside. There was more oil in the cod than cod. I tried to feed a bit of the beef burger to a dog that was allowed to wander over to my table. The dog wouldn’t eat it. View all feedback.

A Lovely efficient waitress could not make up for the food some of which was served warm. Looking forward to lunch after reading the restaurants own promotion, a letdown.
We sat down in a restaurant area with 2 other people and our server was pleasant and friendly. She allowed us 10 minutes to look at the menu and then took our order. A party of 5 or 6 came in after us as well as some people who wanted to eat in the bar. Our main came after about 15 minutes and we were impressed at the fact we didn’t have to wait long despite the amount of customers that had arrived. The food was lovely, we both had Liver and Bacon, and at that point we considered we had picked well. Our plates took a while to clear, which was to be expected, but this is where it all fell down. We never saw our server again, much less be asked if we would like dessert. We tried to catch her eye but she never looked our way. She went to each table asking if things were okay, but it was as if we were invisible. She kept disappearing in the kitchen for 5 minutes at a time so we couldn’t even go up to her and ask. We went to the busy bar to pay our bill after 25 minutes, and despite the nice main, left feeling we would not return. A pity.
Passing through once more this-evening due to weather changed route. And as always a great reception. This place has always been welcoming and friendly. Tonight, I thoroughly enjoyed some bar-room banter which was first class and life being a bit of hardwork in different areas at the moment bought a smile to my face and really made me day.
We took my mother out for her birthday and the food was average. The two steaks were decent, but the chips seemed frozen and had a strange texture. The mussels were overcooked and chewy, with a flavorless sauce. When we mentioned our concerns, we only received a brief apology. The starter of crab and prawn mix on toast turned out to be crab sticks shredded, which we felt was overpriced at £8.50. It's disappointing as the restaurant is in a nice village pub, but we will not be coming back.
