Awesome foods, cooks/chefs slightly better than service staff. 10 out of 10 location and atmosphere. Service: Dine in Price per person: $20–30 Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Walleye
The food at this restaurant is fantastic, but there is a constant struggle with flies while trying to enjoy it. Despite having many fly traps around, the problem persists and raises concerns about the cleanliness of the kitchen. The service is decent, and this review is based on a lunch dining experience. The atmosphere is average, and the recommended dish is the Bison Stew.
My chicken tenders were some of the best I ever had, as was Monica's prime rib salad. Excellent food and service!! Service: Dine in Meal type: Lunch Price per person: $20–30 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
Chislic steak is perfect! Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $30–50 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
The server was rude, which led us to decide against leaving the customary 20% tip. Afterward, the server approached another person at our table—who was paying separately—and angrily demanded that she give a larger tip because we hadn’t left one. Additionally, we had a significant problem with flies in the restaurant. I would rate the food as 3 out of 5, the service as 2 out of 5, and the atmosphere as 4 out of 5.
Nestled beside Spearfish Creek, Latchstring Restaurant boasts a rustic charm and stunning canyon views. Guests have savored a variety of dishes, from hearty buffalo stew to succulent prime rib, often praising the food's quality and unique offerings like smoked buffalo chili. Service, however, has garnered mixed feedback; while some servers were attentive and friendly, others left patrons feeling dissatisfied. The atmosphere is inviting, with dog-friendly patios enhancing the experience. Although the prices can be steep and staffing issues sometimes hinder service, the overall dining experience remains appealing for those visiting this beautiful corner of Spearfish.

This this restaurant is a beautiful setting looking at spearfish Canyon. I highly recommend eating outside. If cooler evening just wear a jacket. Our server Malta was outstanding. She really contributed to making this a perfect evening. I had the ribeye steak which one of the best ribeye steaks I have ever had. I ordered, medium rare and that’s exactly how it came. Sally was very fresh. The croutons were absolutely delicious. My partner had the hamburger steak with a mushroom bourbon sauce, which was out of this world. he also had the turkey noodle soup which was excellent. For dessert we had the peach pie with vanilla ice cream. It was so fresh and delicious and the crust was very flaky. My cousin is to the chef and the bakery chef. When we called the restaurant at 7 PM, they said there was a 15 minute wait. So we arrived a little after 8 PM. There was only four tables of people outside and inside there was all kinds of tables available. When we went outside, we were ignored for quite a long time. One middle-aged gentleman came out and went to the table. Next apologize for them having to wait we thought they’d eaten there because we’ve been there a long time. We got their order inside. Didn’t even acknowledge us. I went inside and I asked for service she said she would send someone. No one came. I started to get up from the table and I saw a lovely young lady named Makyya. we have to she could help us since she said she did not know who our server was but she’d be more than happy to help us. She was a five star server.
We went there for lunch yesterday, the place wasn't full, outside was empty and inside there was a large table already seated as well as a few families but still there were several tables available. It wasn't packed. We arrived around a quarter to 12 and asked the hostess for a high chair. We waited a while for the high chair and eventually had to go ask the cashier for the chair. We did take a few minutes to order but the food took a very long time, so we ended up getting our burgers at almost 12:30pm. I ordered the black and blue burger which was alright but we noticed that the waitress forgot to ask how we wanted our burgers and the other burger we ordered was too rare. We didn't bother to tell them because we wanted to leave already.
Really good food. Beautiful views of the mountains. Service was just OK. A bit lacking. Maddie was great, hard working. Bit on the pricey side, but overall a good time and good experience.
Excellent all around. Dined at Latchstring 3 times while at the Lodge. The nice for dinner and twice for breakfast. Dinner on the patio was a lovey end to the day. Bree made some great recommendations and we had cheese curd appetizer and chislic dinner. Both were new to us. The bread pudding dessert was also excellent. Cudos to staff who ran dinner smoothly despite large wedding party in the room next door. Breakfasts were also very good. We had the savoy omelette, skillet platter and cinnamon roll. Only 2 things I would change: decaf coffee is folders out of a machine (yuck) as would love to have been able to try a glass of local wine with dinner.

The restaurant has a very inviting setting alongside Spearfish Creek. The food was delicious. The soup of the day was Smoked Buffalo Chili soup with cornbread. It was hearty and spicy! We had it as a side to our sandwiches, and it was the perfect compliment to them. I had the 4 cheese Grilled Cheese. My husband had the BLT (very generous with the bacon). The sour dough bread used on both sandwiches was delicious. We were offered indoor or outdoor seating. The view from the back patio was lovely, but we ate indoors due to the wind. I thoroughly recommend eating here. The waitress was cheerful and helpful!
The sandwich we ordered was excellent, the service was satisfactory, and the prices were reasonable for the area.
We stopped by this restaurant after visiting Spearfish Falls, and I’m so glad we did! We enjoyed the Blueberry Vodka Lemonade, a wrap, and onion rings while relaxing on the patio. The food was outstanding, the atmosphere was fantastic, and the staff was top-notch! I really didn’t want to leave. I highly recommend this place!
Went in low season, so it wasn't busy at all. Our server was very friendly and welcoming. Beautiful view from the window where we sat, and the bird food out there was very busy! The flares here are so much more colorful than the rakes in Wisconsin, I'm not sure why, because it's the same way. But they were absolutely beautiful! The food was excellent. I had fish in a creamy white wine sauce over corncake and it was FANTASTIC! I would order it again if I had the chance to go back. We also had the Chislic appetizer that was delicious, and their fries were really good!
The restaurant boasts a welcoming location right next to Spearfish Creek, and our experience was delightful. The soup of the day was a smoked buffalo chili, served with cornbread, and it was both hearty and spicy! We enjoyed it as a side with our sandwiches, and it complemented them perfectly. I ordered the four-cheese grilled sandwich, while my partner had the BLT, which was generously loaded with bacon. The sourdough bread used for both sandwiches was fantastic. We had the option to sit indoors or outdoors; although the view from the back terrace was stunning, we chose to eat inside due to the wind. I highly recommend dining here—the waitress was cheerful and very helpful!

Frazzled staff! Nice view out the back big windows. Mediocre food. We came for the hike that starts from the parking lot. I guess that's all I need to say. ;
Total disappointment. The waitress was an imbecile and I ordered a salad. How can you mess up a salad. I asked for no onions and I got lettuce cheese and strips of chicken. That is not a southwest salad. I asked for balsamic vinaigrette and she brought me out. Balsamic vinegar poured out of a bottle. Biggest waste of $20. Worst meal on my vacation left really dissatisfied.
The food is great, service is awesome Eric and Ava were both awesome and helpful. They both represent the restaurant well. As always, the location is the is the best.
This restaurant is so cozy, and welcoming! We went for my son's birthday and everyone had an amazing time. The food was so tasty, and the portions were very good. Our server was so attentive, and gave us details about certain items on the menu. I will definitely return to this restaurant!
I had a fantastic dining experience at The Latchstring! The food was amazing, particularly their signature dishes—the trout almondine (sauce served on the side) and the cinnamon roll. Both were incredibly fresh and served in generous portions. The staff was friendly, even with just two servers working that evening. The restaurant had a cozy vibe, and the music was delightful. The outdoor view was breathtaking, and I can only picture how lovely it must be to dine on the patio during warmer weather. I highly recommend visiting if you're in the area!

We stopped here for breakfast before heading out for some hiking in the area. The restaurant was clean and had a spacious dining area. I really appreciated the view from our table. Our server was friendly and attentive. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with potatoes, which was hot and quite tasty. I'm really glad we chose to stop here!

The hostess who greeted us could have used a smile, though she may have been having a tough day. Our waiter was very friendly, and the view from the back porch was absolutely stunning! The prices were a bit on the high side. I ordered the cheeseburger along with a side of buffalo stew, and both were just okay—lacking in flavor. My wife had the French dip and French onion soup; I actually thought her soup was quite tasty. I would consider coming back just for the view!
My family and I had a wonderful experience with the prime rib dinner, which was absolutely fantastic! For dessert, we indulged in their homemade Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and Butterfinger cheesecakes, and they were exceptional! The portions were huge and packed with candy. The service was also excellent! Our server, Maddy, was friendly and very accommodating.
Their breakfast is absolutely fantastic! The pancakes were among the best I've ever tasted, filled with flavor throughout all our dishes. The French toast and sausage links were equally delicious. I decided to try a breakfast burrito, which isn't something I usually go for, but our server highly recommended it, and I was not let down. It was huge, bursting with flavor, and served with homemade salsa. The night before, my sister celebrated her wedding at the restaurant, where they offered prime rib and a lemon zest panko-breaded salmon. The salmon was truly exquisite, and everyone who had the prime rib couldn’t stop praising it. The presentation was impressive as well, featuring a vibrant mix of vegetables and roasted potatoes.
