What Kevin B doesn't like about Nullagvik:
What can I say a hotel restaurant in a tiny little village north of the arctic circle. Food was ok service was fine. Can 't charge to your room and still use old fashioned carbon paper for processing CC 's. Cash is best. View all feedback.
The hotel and restaurant far exceeded our expectations. Good food, great service, and a spectacular view. Highly recommend the hotel for its service and a very nice, clean room. We had travel issues due to weather and they were incredibly helpful to someone far from home (Ohio). The restaurant offered a nice sit down dinner with a view difficult to match. The Arctic Ocean with its mountains across the bay were spectacular. We had three dinners. I had a bacon cheeseburger, reindeer and gravy, and a Denali burger. Each was very good. And it was nice sitting for dinner after a long day. Great job to its staff.
Of the limited amount of places to go in Kotzebue, this is by far my favorite one. If you want a nice date night, this is the only option. The Sunday brunch starts at 10am and costs $20/person. Bang for you buck is best. They have a decent spread that includes a small salad bar, soup, BACON, sausage, fried chicken, and more. Wont get sick after eating here.
Great view, nice seating. Had reindeer and gravy and spouse hamburger. Both very good and a variety of food choices. Waitress did a great job managing about ten different groups of people. Can't beat the view. Get a table by the window. Lots of activity along Shore drive.
Nullagvik was our first meal out in Kotzebue last year and again this year. Last year was good, but still impacted by supply chain issues...this year is even better. The menu a surprisingly number of options. Most are traditional americana selections with a sprinkling of local such as reindeer stew and delicious salmon. Reservations are required, although we have walked in and still be served. I do recommend adhering to the policy to ensure a pleasant experience. Like most places they struggle with staffing, especially during peak hours (yes, that happens in Kotzebue, also). There is rarely a wait beyond the reservation time. The staff has always been friendly and accommodating. The dining room overlooks the water from a couple of angles. Sometimes, you can even catch a glimpse of seals at play. It 's definitely the only nice sit down restaurant in the village. If you are expecting a cocktail or wine with your dinner, well, that won 't happen in Kotzebue unless you have dinner at home. There are no alcohol sales in any restaurant or in stores, other than the one liquor store. FYI: you purchase a license to purchase alcohol.
What can I say? This is the nicest restaurant in northwest Alaska. The food is great. They serve steaks and fish, burgers, salads and sandwiches. They even have a reindeer goulash that's not too shabby. The downfall? They cannot get or keep a good server. Sometimes I will be seated for 20 minutes and have to physically call someone over for water and to place my order. Every time I'm here, they have a new server on staff. The turnover must be insane. I have been eating here once a month for a couple years. I travel to the region a lot for work and stay at the hotel and have breakfast, lunch, and dinner here often. For breakfast they have a casual buffet. Has the regular items like bacon and pancakes. You can also order make to order eggs and such. They have a espresso stand as well if you're looking for an americano. The lunch menu has some great sandwiches and salads. The burgers here are legit and huge! They even have a pretty tasty reuben that is grilled crisp and not soggy. For dinner, I recommend getting the salmon, they always cook it to perfection and it comes with a vegetable and rice pilaf. It's a beautiful dish. If you're wanting something lighter, they have a nice Cajun shrimp or chicken salad. Lots of Romain lettuce and the protein is cooked to order. Don't want to eat in the restaurant? You can always order room service or get your meal to go. Just make sure you have plenty of time to wait... sometimes they get backed up in the kitchen.
