The terrace looks out on the busy square in front of the photogenic Eigelstein Gate “Eigelsteintorburg” in a pedestrian area. Although the weather was fine, we went inside because the pleasant atmosphere of the square was somewhat spoilt by loud street musicians. That turned out to be a bad idea. The place does not look very attractive inside, there is some weird purple light, and after we were seated in an almost empty restaurant the waiting staff decided it was time for some lounge disco music. As the asparagus season was in full swing and there were signs announcing special asparagus menus all over Cologne, one of us had asparagus with sauce hollandaise and new potatoes 11,90€ . The asparagus were nice enough but the potatoes were sadly overcooked. A shame really. The “Strammer Max II”, a hearty sandwich with Gouda cheese and fried eggs, was lovely. With two glasses of white wine and some water we spent 30 € for our lunch. A real bargain.

We asked the waitress why didn 't you tell us when we were placing the order, we would have gone somewhere else, and what are we supposed to do now and she called another waitress, perhaps a supervisor, who told us that it 's not their problem, we 're covered cause it 's written on the menu she said. I said the waitress knew we were foreign, and the information about cash only payments written on the menu was in German to which she responded you could have translated it . Then they made my aunt who didn 't feel well in 40 degrees heat walk over to the nearest cash machine by herself, because I didnt have my card with me and if we both left the table the waitress would call the police and they would arrest us. Plus an extra charge for withdrawing cash from the credit card. Ignorant, unfriendly and unhelpful staff, not talking about threatening to have us arrested for 8 Euros that we offered to pop back in with a little bit later when it cools down. Food wasn 't impressive either, very greasy.

Some could feel that the menu is quite compact, but it has a range of food that should satisfy most and we gained the feeling that everything was freshly cooked rather than taken out of a freezer. Service was attentive and friendly and not being German speakers we were appreciative of the language skills of the staff. We were there in early November and on both occasions, the restaurant was devoid of tourists (apart from ourselves) and had many locals as clients.

Overall a lovely restaurant and would recommend to anyone!

In my opinion, the Klaaf is much more than just a simple bistro, because you can go there at any time of day, either if you just want to drink a coffee, but eve... read more In my opinion, the Klaaf is much more than just a simple bistro, because you can go there at any time of day, either if you just want to drink a coffee, but even if you want to go out in the evening, there is also a good cocktail card and you really get pretty much everything in drinks. However, you should not neglect the menu, because the kitchen of Klaaf is just good and delicious! Since last year there have been a number of variations of flame cake, I have eaten one with whistles and it was only divine! Otherwise there are also (sometimes changing) large noodle dishes and especially the peasant carving is highly recommended, with I feel the prices as very favorable with regard to the huge portions. You can also have breakfast there, which will probably be by noon, but I did not personally test the breakfast card. There you will find more younger audiences, but you can always come to the day when you go. There are also a lot of rooms in the restaurant that are over two floors (which, in my opinion, is more beautiful), in summer you can sit outside, these places are also very desirable and quickly forgiven in really nice weather.
