Last night I had dinner at Joseph’s in Cologne with a guest, and unfortunately the experience did not live up to expectations. We arrived 16 minutes late for our reservation, and the owner/manager immediately pointed this out in an unwelcoming manner, despite the restaurant being half empty. We were seated in a rather unpleasant area of the restaurant, near the coat rack (in plain view) and the restrooms. The service was disappointing from the start. The waiter appeared bored, unprofessional, and rushed us through the ordering process. The dishes were not explained, and we felt pressured to order even though it was only 9:00 pm and the website states that the kitchen closes at 10:00 pm. When we asked for the wine list, our first choice was unavailable. We then asked the owner for a recommendation and were suggested a more expensive bottle (which we only realized when we received the bill) that did not match its price in terms of quality. As for the food: rather high prices for a menu that was not particularly innovative. The goat cheese salad included in the chef’s trio of starters was good. The beef tartare was mediocre. The Wiener Schnitzel was acceptable but nothing special. Overall, the service was poor: inattentive, unmotivated, and unprofessional staff. A real shame, as the restaurant itself is beautiful and enjoys a lovely view over the Rhine. Unfortunately, I do not believe I will return.
The schnitzel was excellent. It was thin and so soft that we could give it to our baby who only has eight teeth and he could still eat it. The prices are a little high (25 Euro per schnitzel) but the service is very good and there was no wait at all. It was the only seemingly great schnitzel restaurant we could find which was open for lunch on a Monday and not fully booked (as Gruber 's was). The celery soup, bread and oil, and beer were also great. This was probably the best meal of our six day trip to Germany. If I wasn 't in vacation mode though and this were in a city where I lived, I might dock a point for the prices.
Josef 's is a beautiful Austrian restaurant at tje Agrippina dockyard with a stunning view of the Rhine. I ordered the turbot on basil risotto, which was handsomely prepared and very tasty. Only objection I had was the dessert named 'Moor in a Dresshirt ', which was mildly offensive and not representative of the friendly staff and atmosphere. All in all I would recommend it to Josef 's.
