It was a Thursday, 5.30-6ish, and the place was packed by 7. Many Restaurant Association Awards on the wall as you walk in, I can see why. Great to find a place putting out that level of quality so near to where we live.

During a recent visit for S... read more Hartes has been one of my favorite places to eat for a decade, but over the last year or two, the standards have noticeably slipped. During a recent visit for Sunday lunch, the service was lacking; no one came to check on our meal, and we had to ask for basic table settings like salt and pepper. The food itself was incredibly disappointing. The horseradish mentioned on the menu was missing entirely, and the dish lacked the warmth you'd expect, tasting as though it had been sitting under a heat lamp. The roast potatoes were easily the worst I’ve had—soggy and practically tasteless. To top it off, the portions were tiny despite the expensive price tag. Overall, the food has become mediocre. It completely lacks the flair and originality that made Hartes so special years ago.

I had crispy pork for a starter which was more fat than crisp but tasty enough. Sole in curry sauce with rice was delicious. My companion had the 39 euro steak. To be fair it was a fairly good steak, pepper sauce, chips, two onion rings but there was something sort of bare looking about the plate. Maybe a salad garnish would be nice. With one dessert, a pint, two 00 Peronis and two coffees it came to around 100 euro. Staff were efficient and friendly.
