This is a small restaurant of less than a dozen tables inside, plus about half a dozen outside, weather permitting. When I arrived there for lunch at about one o'clock the outside seating area was full. So, I took a seat at one the few free tables inside. There was only a single waiter, probably himself the innkeeper, who served food and drinks. He was evidently overcharged by the number of guests he had to cope with. As a result, it took quite a while before he turned to me for the first time. He is not to be blamed for this delay, but despite being stressed he could at least have greeted me when I came in, which he had failed to do.“Gasthaus Malissa” is situated in an old house, as its vaulted dining room reveals. But the entire restaurant seems to have been thoroughly refurbished quite recently. Thus, it looks nicely and modern . The atmosphere would be alright if the dining room were not so smelly. However, due to the fact that the waiter has to pass the door to the adjacent kitchen very often the smell originating from there spreads in the whole restaurant. There is no permanent menu. Therefore, one has to choose between the two menus of the day and about three further dishes, all written on chalkboards at the entrance. The waiter expects to receive the order straight away. He makes a stern face when he has to enumerate what is actually on offer. Most guests order either of the two menus anyhow, since they are really cheap. This is even more true given that the portions are huge.As I could gather from the list of menus of the current week, the cuisine here is orthodox and not very creative. It comprises mainly the ubiquitous Austrian suspects. This is definitely a restaurant for locals, many of whom the waiter knows by name. Although I had not opted for one of the menus, my lunch was served after only a short waiting time. It was not special in any respect, but it was perfectly alright.Had the waiter been a little friendlier I could recommend “Gasthaus Malissa” to anybody who seeks an abundant lunch for little money in the center of Bruck an der Mur and is satisfied by the limited number of dishes available here.
