Cuillin Brewery - ISLE OF SKYE

Had a lovely vegetarian sunday roast at Sligachan Hotel, in it's cozy but friendly pub area where both tourists and locals gather. They even specially made vegetarian gravy for me. Great staff, well priced and delicious food, and great atmosphere too!

The Sligachan Hotel may possibly be the finest hotel I've stayed in. For those with a penchant for the highlands it is a truly splendid affair. Situated twixt the opening salvo of Broadford and the quayside idyll of Portree as one drives over the once controversial bridge from Kyle and the mainland, it must be highly recommended for its stunning location, excellent rooms and quality service. The building itself comprises several complimentary sections: the hotel and accommodation wings, a minor museum dedicated to the hotel's history and the legacy of its contribution to the conquering of the Black Cuillins behind it, the restaurant and residents' lounge, the Cuillin Brewery and Seamus' Bar. Within the grounds are well kept gardens beneath the auspices of shady trees and a play area incorporating a zip slide. For Under 16's. ONLY. With its whitewashed turrets and slate grey roofs beaming beneath the famous teeth of the Cuillin ridge, the Sligachan Hotel presents itself as a homely, more modest version of a Bavarian castle. And indeed, for the most part of our stay, the Hotel played host to coach loads of German tourists. It's a place for reaching beyond. For exceeding one's limits with a smile on one's upturned sun kissed cheeks. Everywhere one looks there is evidence of super human feats from the setting of the record for a running ascent and descent of the mighty Glamaig, towering imperiously above the hotel to the west, to seemingly impossibly feats of a complete traverse of the Black Cuillin ridge in under four hours. The Sligachan Hotel has seen it all and it's hard not to feel inspired. Our room was exceedingly spacious and well furnished, replete with all the modern comforts separate shower and bath, TV/DVD player and fine views. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful on a variety of topics. We procured wine glasses and bottle stopper for our room, made good use of the drying facilities after a wet return from Blaven and discovered that the hotel is well stocked with 1:25 000 maps of the Cuillins too. Breakfast was superb including the full range of options you might expect in the highlands with the exception of smoked kippers, which was disappointing. Restaurant prices are high so be warned. We spurned the restaurant in favour of eating frequently at Seamus' bar next door. Seamus's bar is a homely and well kept tavern with a good range of Cuillin beers from the on site brewery (although they were a bit watery for my taste) and other guest ales too though sadly there were no representatives from the superb Skye Brewing Company. The bar itself boast single malts in the hundreds and seems to stock the full range. They make a mesmerising and tempting array behind the bar itself. The food was good and good value, but as with many other eateries on Skye, with just a little more effort it could be great. I would recommend the Cullen Skink for starters. They provide distinct day time and evening menus covering a good traditional Scottish cuisine and modern dishes too such lamb tagine with couscous, for example. Pudding portions are plentiful and traditional. We discovered that from within Seamus' Bar, it is possible to spend an entire evening staring solidly at those formiddable Black Cuillin peaks. Who needs television? WARNING: as with anywhere on Skye watch out for the midges. They are ferocious!

We really liked the food here! This is our second time back this week. Both times after a really long and difficult hike in the rain. The fish and chips and marinated pork are so delicious!!!

Lovely hotel. Nice atmosphere in the bar. Very spacious. Staff are friendly and proffesional Very child friendly and a playpark over the drive ;o) Superb location for touring the island or walking/climbing. You can get dropped/picked up here on the buses from Glasgow and Inverness. Nice place for a spot of lunch and a few drinks. The backdrop to the hotel is spectacular. Wherever you head to in skye you'll pass this hotel, you cant miss it! x

Great hotel what Skye's all about. This hotel is right alongside the famous pack horse bridge that seems to appear on every advert for Skye. The views all round are incredible (Weather depending and any outdoorsy type person will relish the position of the Hotel at the foothills of the Cuillins. The locals sit outside and laugh at all the walkers heading off with Compass' round their necks! (type Gabbro into Google if you're not sure why! If you gancy a stroll, try and run from the hotel up to the top of Glamaig and back in under 45 mins if you do you'll be a record breaker! (Glamaig is the cone shaped mountain next to the Loch . Or you could do it barefoot and try and beat the 55min record by a ghurka in the late 1880's!!!
