A Bougatsa shop since 1922. very tasty and high quality food served by friendly staff. the load is open from 6 o'clock in the morning and makes it the perfect stop for a fast caffe and energy refill when they arrive after a nine hour drive in heraklion.
A must go place if you visit Heraklion. Right on the main square of the city (liontaria or lion square), it offers the epic Cretan bougatsa, made with specially made filo pastry and xinomizithra cheese (Cretan sour ricotta). You can also try Macedonian bougatsa with cream. The place also offers great Greek coffee and espresso.
We kept coming back here during our Heraklion stay since the sweets are so good. What attracted us here were recommendations of our friends, the fact this is the oldest bougatsa store here and our wish to try something authentic. What kept us coming back was the sweet semolina cream pie with vanilla ice cream on the top. It’s so good! Traditional semolina pie and bougatsa with honey and nuts are also amazing. Have some coffee with that as well. On top of everything, the location is great, very vibrant atmosphere and a lot of locals enjoying their sweets and coffee.
We ordered the traditional bougatsa with honey and nuts and the cream bougatsa with ice cream. The first was incredible a perfect combination of salty, sweet and crunchy. The cream bougatsa is worth trying but in my view not as good. They also do excellent coffee.
Sweet little caffe with a magnificent view of the fountain! it is a must if they want to try the Greek bougatsa. they have both the sweet (cream filled) savory (cheese filled), and a beautiful combination of sweet and hearty with cheese and honey. I got that and it was delicious! it is something more pricier than other places I have seen, but the atmosphere and the friendly service make it worth while. it is a great place to observe people full of local and tourist. I recommend to grab a bougatsa and freddo cappuccino!
