Description

The Nelson Public House, affectionately known as The Nelson, is a charming historic pub in the heart of Ipswich with a rich history dating back to the 17th century. Once known as Noah’s Ark, the building has evolved over the years but has beautifully retained its traditional character, now Grade II listed and lovingly restored to reflect its heritage. Under the stewardship of landlords Tom and Josie, alongside their dedicated manager Joe and the team, The Nelson has returned to its roots as a lively, welcoming traditional pub. It offers a regularly changing fresh menu featuring seasonal specials, alongside an extensive selection of wines and carefully chosen guest beers from independent breweries. Visitors can enjoy classic pub favourites like Nelson’s Shepherd’s Pie, seared sea bass, vibrant vegetarian and vegan options, and of course, the finest fish and chips in town. The pub also prides itself on serving the best Sunday roast with locally sourced meats, Yorkshire puddings, and proper gravy, including delicious vegan options. For those with a sweet tooth, desserts such as sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie are sure to satisfy. The atmosphere at The Nelson is warm and inclusive, with regular events including pub quizzes, wine tastings, and the occasional poetry night. The staff enjoy joining in community celebrations in fancy dress for occasions like Pride and St Patrick’s Day, adding to the sense of fun and camaraderie. Throughout the colder months, open fires add to the cosy ambiance, making it an ideal spot to relax with your dog, as the pub is very dog friendly. The snug bar offers an intimate space for groups of 12-20, perfect for gatherings, while larger celebrations are also warmly welcomed. The secluded courtyard garden becomes a suntrap in summer, perfect for enjoying a refreshing pint, Pimms, or one of the pub’s delicious cocktails well into the evening. With two sister pubs nearby – The Red Lion in Manningtree and The Marlborough in Dedham – The Nelson invites you to explore the best of Essex’s traditional hospitality. Whether you’re a loyal local or visiting for the first time, the team at The Nelson looks forward to welcoming you, sharing great food, drink, and company in a truly historic setting. To ensure the best experience, booking ahead is recommended, especially for larger groups. The Nelson continues to be a cornerstone of the Ipswich community, blending history, tradition, and a joyful spirit into every visit.

Enjoyed a delicious Sunday roast, catered to non dairy needs for myself however was let down when I wanted to order a coffee and no milk alternative was available and was told they only do cows milk. The waitress was very apologetic however it would be great to offer milk alternatives to your non dairy guests.

Really friendly pub with well kept beers. Sunday roasts a favourite. Good food menu and there’s always a specials board. Lovely old pub minutes from waterfront and town centre. Nice little patio to the rear.

I began frequenting this restaurant in 2023 and have found the atmosphere to be warm and welcoming. The staff is friendly and the food and drinks are both delicious.
