Recently at the restaurant for the first time honestly loved it! The owner was aware and even socialized with us which isn't typical.Coming back next time I am in Iowa City! View all feedback.
What Andre Noth doesn't like about Sumo Sushi Grill:
Waited over an hour for food that never showed. The waitress said she was new so not her fault but the manager never came to explain things. The atmosphere is just ok, nothing special. View all feedback.
Order the spicy tuna crispy rice appetizer thing. Just do it!!! And the ramen isn’t as good but that doesn’t mean it’s not also awesome. Amazing! It’s just so
Its okay. Great location for college students, but I think the food's a little overpriced for the portions and quality, even with their weekday discounts. We also watched as our sushi platter sat on the serving counter for about 10 minutes before it got to our table : . Food tasted alright. Overall I might try again if there's really nothing else in the area that I feel like eating. Hope they improve their service and offerings, especially when there are other restaurants in the area that offer more for less!
A 3% service unexplained “service” charge added to everything. That should be a crime. I will reduce my tip by twice as much as any post pandemic service charge. You are hurting your staff and customer base. I won’t return to any place that blatantly rips me off or try’s to extort a tip before services have been rendered.
We decided to try this place out while in Iowa City for the night. When we walked in we were seated immediately. There were probably 5 other tables in the restaurant at the same time. It took close to 10 minutes to get a server to come to the table. The two girls walked by several times and no one asked if we had been helped. My mom had to go to the bar and tell someone to come over to the table. We ordered pineapple rangoons and we thought maybe we accidentally ordered the regular crab rangoons because there was no taste of pineapple. However there was no taste of crab either. I ordered the Mongolian beef, which was not nearly what I had expected. It was tough round steak, sauce was way off from traditional Mongolian beef, it was super salty and lacked in flavor. It tasted like a 60 year old white woman cooked it. My son ordered two sushi rolls and those were just ok. Nothing special. My mom ordered a tofu dish and she had said it had no flavor. One positive thing I can say, is that after the wait to be served, the waitress was much more prompt. My opinion, it couldn't be further from asian food.
Walked in with a group of 6 for lunch at 2:40pm, (they close at 3:00pm). First time here. Hostess seated us, then tells us they close at 3:00pm so sorry . What? I must have been wrong all these years because I thought that meant you stopped taking new orders at 3:00pm. I see they reopen at 5:00pm for the evening meal. Incredibly disappointing but glad to see the restaurant is doing so well that they can afford to turn away 6 paying customers. Hard no.
