What User doesn't like about Gumloon Restaurant:
Besides climbing up a flight of stairs so not recommendable for elderly or handicapped the place was empty so NO atmosphere. It is a shame that the Chinese restaurants always try to adapt to what they "THINK" is the Australian taste. We look for the genuine taste and not with added sugar.... Prices and portions reasonable but service could have been more forth coming. Wouldn't go back! View all feedback.
Last night, five of us dined at this restaurant - three locals and two visitors from Europe. The menu was extensive and seemed to transport us back to the 1960s and 1970s in the best way possible, with no mention of modern Chinese cuisine. We enjoyed classic dishes from the past, including mixed plates, a chicken dish, and deep-fried scallops. The food was not your typical cheap Chinese takeout; it was well-prepared, flavorful, colorful, and pleasing to the senses. The scallops were a particular highlight, being served last and tasting fresh and crisp. Although the cost was $39, it was well worth it. The rice dishes that accompanied the meal were delicious, although the special fried rice was a bit lacking in variety. Despite the fact that time seemed to stand still in this country town, the restaurant provided a nostalgic and excellent dining experience. The only improvement that could be made is to enhance the basic wine list. Overall, the food and ambiance were outstanding and complemented our evening perfectly. It truly was a country tribute to excellence.
The appetizer was amazing, and my friends and I were excited for our main courses. However, we were all disappointed when our chowmein dishes arrived as they were watery and tasteless. Instead of noodles, we were served spaghetti. Overall, we were very disappointed and do not plan on returning to this restaurant.
During our visit, table 7 shared 7 meals along with rice. The menu offered a variety of options. While all the dishes were tasty and well portioned, nothing stood out as exceptional. The vegetables were cooked perfectly. The restaurant offers reliable Chinese cuisine with a steady stream of takeout orders. Access to the restaurant is through a narrow staircase to the first floor. Despite the restaurant being relatively empty, there was a significant wait for our meals. However, the staff were accommodating, prioritizing the delivery of vegetarian dishes for our dining companion who usually has to wait until last.
This is a great place for large tables, we also see business parties here all the time. The owner and staff are attentive and the food is classic chinese. Had the rainbow beef in birds nest for our last visit. I love their san choy bow and the duck dishes are delicious. Husband had his favourite this night, the salt and pepper pork.
We just finished a delicious meal of excellent Chinese food in a country town where we had no idea where to go. Lovely hostess, and the cook out back is a Shanghai Chef. We enjoyed large Special Fried Rice, Mongolian Beef and Combination Chow Mien. The venue is large and friendly, with clean facilities. Size of portions were generous with yummy flavours. If we are ever back this way we would definitely go again, also chat with the hosts for their suggestions. 5/5 from us.
