Shapiros was excellent, we went out of our way to try the place for the first time and we were not disappointed! Cafeteria style dining with excellent sandwiches and soups. Exactly what you want in a good deli. Desserts were good too! View all feedback.
What Fanny doesn't like about Shapiro's Deli Cafeteria:
Let's see...Rude staff, shady neighborhood (and I'm not talking about the trees), dubious cleanliness, and outrageously overpriced food. People in Indy go on and on about Shapiro's, but for the life of me I can't figure out why. The price alone for mediocre food is enough to scare me away from any future visits. Add in the environment and the incredible rudeness of the staff, and I'd say that the restaurant's heyday... View all feedback.
This hidden gem of a deli excels in every aspect. The decor may be a bit outdated with old booths and tables, but they are impeccably clean and well-maintained, which did not hinder our enjoyment. The staff, from the line workers to the restroom attendant, were all friendly and helpful, with a great rapport that enhanced the atmosphere. The food was delicious with a variety of options and generous portion sizes. Despite the cafeteria-style setup, this was a fantastic dining experience. I would gladly return if given the opportunity.
Wow wow wow. For some reason this deli takes me back in time. Cafeteria style, timeless dishes and no fuss character. Did I mention portions? Come hungry. Everything I chose, I ate more of than I anticipated. Stuffed cabbage for the win! And the fluffy Mac n cheese! I might have started with dessert (pecan pie) first too.
I recently visited the only remaining location downtown and was pleased to find plenty of parking available. The food was delicious, although I found the long strings of corned beef to be a bit difficult to eat and would have preferred smaller pieces. The poppyseed cake was large and absolutely delicious, and the side veggies were very good. My main issue was that the website advertised a breakfast menu without noting that it is only served on weekends. We only found out about this change from a paper posted on the menu board in the cafeteria line. This caused some confusion as we were expecting to order breakfast and had to navigate around other menu items and equipment in the process. Despite this hiccup, I do plan on returning in the future.
Have been here several times over the years. Visiting Indy recently, decided to stop by. Happy to report they were still about as good as they used to be. Large crowd on a Wednesday eve at 5:30pm. We had the Corned Beef Reuben sandwich and the brisket dinner, both were excellent. The a slice of strawberry topped cheesecake to go.
This is a well-known restaurant that we have visited before, although it has been many years since our last visit. As soon as I walked in, I was reminded of why this deli is such a historic spot - its authenticity and character! They have made some changes to accommodate online and pickup orders only, so if you plan to take your food home, head to the left area to place your order. They offer a variety of cakes, sweets, bagels, breads, chips, and other items for sale. My order for two classic Reubens was prepared quickly! One standout feature is that they offer gluten-free bread at no extra charge, which I really appreciate. The sandwiches were generously filled and tasty, although I would have liked a bit more sauce on mine. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his sandwich. We will definitely be back to dine in and enjoy the cozy atmosphere. Parking is plentiful, seating is ample, and there are options to please everyone.
