What Keyon Raynor dislikes about Fico:
I had only head good things about this place but it left me both hungry and very disappointed. We left it in the hands of the chef to cook for me and got the $65 - 6 course meal. What a mistake. The food combination didn't work and our waitress told us we would be very satisfied post the 6 courses. We were all starved. The service was good at the start but once they realized we weren't satisfied with the courses, we... View all feedback.
Beautiful ambience and decor. I loved the little details such as the little fish craved into the wooden table. The art piece on the wall of a face made out of wood with animals and vegetation.<br/ <br/ Service was friendly and food was delicious. We had:<br/ Oysters: fresh with great vinegary garlic sauce to go with it<br/ Venison cappelletti: pasta was cooked al dente, the mushroom sauce was amazing with lots of earthy flavour<br/ Pigeon and black rice: well cooked pigeon and the black rice was so flavoursome with pieces of meat throughout<br/ Garden salad: simple and fresh<br/ Mandarin and Yuzu coconut gelato: great and citrus and delicious<br/ Carb and bananas gelato: sweet. I loved the banana wafer that came with it<br/
This place is a wonderful find. Quite spacious but with relatively little seating, it’s intimate but without the epic price tag that often involves. We started with the sourdough with fig leaf oil and balsamic careful, these thick slices of warm sourdough are almost a meal in themselves! For entree with had the ballotine brioche game terrine baked inside brioche loaf with game jus. It was meaty, earthy and delicious. Then for our main we had potato tortelli with eel and chervil which was quite the revelation. The inspiration is Japanese Italian and it was the perfect blend of the two flavour palates. The tortelli was creamy and rich with the eel adding an awesome bite. They have a vast wine list but we opted for their strong German beers the white triple was particularly good. The waitresses were knowledgeable and fun and I highly recommend you stop in!
The photos don’t really do Fico any justice. Everything about this place was amazing. The food, service, drinks and atmosphere were all wonderful. If I’m ever back in Hobart again I will definitely be going back here to see what else they have created. Each dish was packed full of flavours and absolutely delicious. Huge shout out to the wait staff, they did a fantastic job as well.
Wow!! Definitely one to eat at if in Hobart. The food and wine pairing degustation is worth doing. Be sure to book in advance. Non-pretentious restaurant with fantastic food and service. The wine pairings were excellent and push your boundaries a bit but without being over the top. Really well done!! Highly recommend!!
Fico is simply a must if you’re visiting Hobart. The venue is a mix of art deco, industrial and quirky. Absolutely loved the vibe. Service was attentive without being too warm. It was a perfect mix of being there just enough without being over bearing. Fig tonic delicious. Great way to kick off your evening. Wonderful wine list with lots of interesting choices and knowledgeable somms wait staff. The food all incredible. It was wonderful to see a different rendition of oysters after having seen so many natural mignonette oysters on other tas eateries. Perfect crumb, I could have eaten 10 more of them! Sourdough wow. The crust on the bread phenomenal. Loved the fig and balsamic oil it was served with. So creative. Every dish was bang on in flavour. The only note I will have is that the pastas were a bite more than al dente and could have done with 30 more seconds on the boil. Other note is that the first 3 courses were served extremely quickly (almost aggressively, which I didn’t mind at all) but the wait between the tortellini and wagyu ragu was extremely lengthy. The entire duration of the meal I thought was good, but the pace could have been more consistent between courses. Overall amazing flavours, great venue. I will definitely recommend Fico if you’re interested in a great interesting set menu experience.
