We chatted quite a bit with John, whose confidence in his BBQ was evident in the incredible flavors of the food. I had the brisket, which was the best I've ever tasted, while my wife enjoyed the pulled pork and relished every bite. For our sides, we chose smoked cabbage, mixed greens, and mac and cheese—all of which were excellent. You absolutely must try the smoked cabbage—I loved it! John even treated us to a few sample ribs and some shrimp gumbo filled with shrimp, crab, and conch. Both were outstanding. We rounded off our meal with their sole dessert, banana pudding, which was just as delightful as the rest of the meal. A few weeks ago, I thought I had found the best BBQ in Knoxville at another place, but I was mistaken. That spot was good, but Slappy's has definitely won my vote for the best BBQ in town.

Food is very good, though one visit I got significantly larger side portions than the next. Staff was really good one visit and flat out terrible the next. One waitress walked by my table several times without so much as a greeting. Finally had to walk to the kitchen to flag her down and place my order. This is something I'm only gonna excuse once before I stop visiting. Hopefully they get better with time.
