The school 's history goes back to 1888, when it was established under the name Bærum Middelskole following the initiative of the farmers on the farms Dalbo and Steen and with the help of Bærum parish society. The teaching first took place at Valler farm, but was later moved to the center of Sandvika. Originally the school was private, but from 1899 it also received support from Bærum municipality. The gymnasium was officially opened on 8 June 1938, after welcoming the first students the year before. The school has gradually been upgraded and expanded over the years in line with the population growth in Bærum and the increased flow of pupils to the school. In 1941 the school was requisitioned by the Labor Service and temporary barracks were set up which were removed after the war. The last extension came in 1998 when the auditorium, workplaces for the teachers and new computer rooms for the students were put in place. The school 's motto: Heart and spirit, will and responsibility The Valler march was organized at the school in the 1970s and 90s, and was taken up again in 2012.
