Was Douglas Wright at Joia a mag?

I recently dined at this excellent Portuguese restaurant in Harrison, and it was an exceptional experience. The star of the evening was our wonderful server, who was not only knowledgeable about the menu but also incredibly attentive and friendly. Their recommendations were spot on, enhancing our dining pleasure. View all feedback.

What Alessandro Frittitta dislikes about Joia:

I was charged convenience fee of 4% for noon cash payment, I know restaurants are allowed to charge credit card surcharge but it was my first time at Jóia Restaurant in Harrison, It is recommended that the website owner publish a post on their website so first time customers are aware of this fee before make the decision to make a reservation. Appetizer was very good. Octopus and kale. The main course was lackluster sadly. A big beautiful steak with ham, egg, pickled cauliflower, and homemade potato chips on top. The steak had exactly zero seasonings on it. No salt. No pepper. Nothing. Very odd. It made the entire dish bland and tasteless. I felt bad for the steak. Service was fine. I left the server a huge tip. Atmosphere was a ton of fun as they had a karaoke dj there who was really good. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $30–50 Food: 3 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Grilled Octopus Parking options: Free parking garage

I’ve been eating and ordering from them for four years ! They are the best. It’s like eating homemade meals. I’ve had their chicken saltimbocca special twice and it’s my favorite! They have the best wings around too! Staff is awesome and always makes you feel welcome! It’s always clean and spacious if you wanted to bring your family! Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $20–30 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Caesar Salad, Steak Sandwich

Food was ok, calamari felt and looked more like onion rings than calamari, drinks were fine, I liked my dirty martini, but the espresso martini wasn’t that good at all, I ordered a jumbo pretzel, when I asked for another small sauce, I was told I have to pay for it, I told the bar tender no I won’t pay for a sauce, she said talk to the manager, then she came back with 4 small sauces, I told her wow this is too much and thank you, you didn’t have to, she said it was her manager asking her to charge me but it’s ok not to worry about it, now I closed my tap, and guess what? They charged me 2.50 for sauces that I was told it’s ok don’t worry about! At this point, I will pay my full check, but would we all come back a group of almost 30 people waiting to attend the soccer game that night? Trust me, it’s not worth it, you guys wanted to charge me for a sauce that literally won’t cost you 5 cents when my check is more than $50 dollars! What a horrible customer service! In food industry and restaurants you know one small sauce won’t add anything to your overall cost, but playing around to make me pay 2.5??? Smh! Seriously! The manager needs some courses in cost management and customer service! Very disappointed! Price per person: $50–100 Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1

Great stop before heading to Red Bull Arena for a Gotham FC match. We will visit next time in the area.

I had an extremely distasteful experience with the staff and management. We went New Year’s Eve afternoon and sat at the bar and were given a happy hour menu. After ordering two drinks and wings from the happy menu. After we were given our drinks we were told that was HAD to pay the full price because they didn’t have happy hour on New Year’s Eve. I stated that I wasn’t paying full price because the waitress give us the happy hour menu and said that it was happy hour. We ask to speak to the manager. First another rude waitress comes over. We ask to speak to a manager again and finally he comes. He attempted to explain that they don’t have happy hour because it’s New Year’s Eve. I express I understood and if I order another drink I will gladly pay full price because he made me aware of that. However, I expressed that it wasn’t my fault that I was misinformed by his employee and I shouldn’t have to pay full price for what was presented to me from a happy hour menu. He threatened to call the police and lied said we had it our hands on him. He was a white manager and we were two black men. I instantly knew what narrative he was attempting to make. We asked for our check to be given so we can pay for the two drinks we had. He refused to put in his code to override the system because he was still trying to charge us full price. Finally another another come over never said a word, he just put his code in so the waitress can print our check. I still paid for our two drinks even though the experience absolutely horrible. Because I didn’t want the narrative he attempted to present of two men to end like we were just trying to get something for free. In business if an employee misinforms the customer. It’s the businesses responsibility to honor what was told make the correction and move forward.

Great restaurant in Harrison confused America with Portuguese cuisine. Interesting take on a sports bar, family-friendly with great waiting staff. Food was fantastic and great when you tied something different than the norm. Very big portions!

My partner and I went here becuase we wanted to enjoy the happy hour and it worth it and extremely affordable, I can understand why there are is many regulars here. Service is good and food is wonderful. I have done both carry out and dine in. (Top Pick) Pealla Seafood I bought this thinking it would be a small expensive, boy was I wrong. This thing huge, the shear weight of it was astonishing. Being frugal, my partner and I had enough for 14 servings lasting 3 days!! As 30 bucks, divided by 14 is 2.14 a plate. That is extremely affordable. The taste was fantastic, not too oily, yet the rice goes down easily. The lobster was a shocker as I didnt expect that, the shrimp, clams, muscles, and scallops were there. Each serving I had was filled with seafood, so they don't cheap out on pleasing you! Its worth it and the taste is incredible! Ham and Cheese w/French Fries I bought this thinking it would also be a simple snack, but the rustic style bread is extremely fresh. The ham they used was good quality and cheese was tasty. It tasted good, great quick lunch or snack for sure. Mac and Cheese w/Shrimp A nice pile of Mac and Cheese, the cheese was good, thought it was like canned cheese than special mixtures. But it was good, the shrimp was pentiful and good. I recommend this plate for children and fans. I wouldn't get it again though. Shrimp Cakes This was very good, one shrimp in each dumpling like shape. It was like nachos with shrimp. Pretzel A huge pretzel with amazing generic canned fake cheese, very obvious but very fun to eat. I rely on the cheese a lot, so maybe won't get it again, but if you like eating it plain, then its very good. Complimentary Bread Fresh baked bread from some bakery, worth it. Mash Potatoes Good mixture in the mash potatoes and taste. Nothing wild, but it was a side dish. French Fries I decided to give french fries its own review, it tastes great and I am not sure they add an extra coating to it, but they make it really crispy. I will always get fries here! Overall, amazing experience and food, they know how to prepare food and I would say to come here and try out all the seafood plates! Its worth it. I wish they created their own cheese mixture, still I be a regular here!

Joia has the best seafood in the area! It has absolutely delicious paella and fry calamari. All their freezing dishes are wonderful. My favorite is her seafood plated(at my time MP $105 for 2-3 people big part!!!!! very fresh, good quality ingredients, large part, fair prices. Great place for casual diners and appointments! During the pandemic, Joia kept its food quality. Even take-outs and deliveries are surprisingly large portions and great! Respect!

Had a business dinner and sat in the bar waiting for everyone to arrive. The bartender was friendly, smiling and had a good choice of alcohol. We sat right away when everyone arrived. The waiter was able to maintain all drunks and food orders. The kitchen was able to get the appetizers in good time and we were not rushing to drink and talk a reasonable time between appetizers and dinner. Food quality was good and no complaints about quality, quantity, service. Good culinary experience.

I moved to Harrison in July 2020, and La Joia is hands down the best restaurant in the town. Whether it’s takeout or dinning in the restaurant always expect: Generous Great sized portions, great drinks—try the Blue Sangria and then thank me later , and great service. Portuguese food with many different options, flavors and their presentation of the food is always embellished yet still always feels like a home cooked meal. La Joia always has daily specials which I see on their Instagram account. I even recommended the restaurant to a friend’s mother last month and I was told that she has now been there multiple times. Word of Mouth doesn’t do this place justice. Try it out yourself! Caution—Be prepared to take food home when you eat out here.
