Aunt Chilada's - Hamden
Aunt Chilada's
Description
Aunt Chilada’s offers a lively atmosphere with attentive staff and generally flavorful dishes, making it a popular spot for friends to gather. While some enjoy the tasty food, others note inconsistencies, such as a sweet twist on traditional flavors and occasional off-tasting chicken. The drink menu impresses with strong margaritas, but dessert options like flan may disappoint. Taco Tuesday deals can be misleading, with some items not matching advertised prices. Cleanliness issues, particularly in the women’s restroom, have been reported, suggesting room for improvement in overall customer experience. The ambiance blends Caribbean rather than Mexican tunes, which may surprise traditionalists.

Having worked as a waiter myself, I know that a failure to split a bill is never really "the kitchen's fault." This is something that should be communicated at the beginning of the meal, not at the end. In today’s dining environment, there’s no reason a restaurant can't split a bill unless they have outdated equipment or are simply being lazy. All they needed to do was hand us the bill with a pen and let us divide it ourselves. I can't help but wonder if this was an attempt to maximize the tip. However, we would have been more generous had our initial request to split the checks been honored. Ultimately, most of our group decided we wouldn't be returning and would prefer to find another place for happy hour. Torito's in North Haven has a happy hour with Mariachi bands on Fridays and Saturdays, so we'll likely go there next time instead.
The food was very tasty, but be warned we went on taco Tuesday and the deals on the board are totally misleading. While it says $4 street tacos (no stipulations), most of the street tacos are actually still $6, we were charged that but no one told us of this rule or has it posted.
Once again, you need to check your bill. I was overcharged on a plate of nachos. The waitress asked if I wanted the door cream on Guacamole on the side, which I did. However, she charged me $6 for the side of Guacamole. Why wouldn't she state that when she took the order?Anyway, $25 for nachos and a soft drink is outrageous if you ask me. BTW, the nachos were just ok.
