Eat here! Whatever you fancy about Chinese food, you will find it here. The portions were large and the variety was impressive - from the very authentic to the fairly tame. I did notice that patrons waited patiently as each table was fully served in the order that they arrived. It was very interesting to watch but ultimately worth the wait. View all feedback.
This place is awesome if you like real Chinese food. We have eaten there many times and always go back for more. Some of our favorite dishes are Chili Chicken and shredded patatoes. The restaurant is very casual, nithing upscale but the staff are friendly and the service is good.
This isn't a fancy setting, but the food is amazing and authentic. The chef/owner comes from Chengdu, which is the centre of Sichuan cuisine. I've been several times over the past year or so, and it is only getting better. Authenticity is confirmed by the number of Chinese university students seen there regularly. The hot and sour soup was appropriately spicy and sour, but had a brightness from fresh tomatoes that isn't usually present in Chinese hot & sour. Twice cooked pork contained incredibly tender morsels of pork belly with chile and "numbing" Sichuan pepper, but also with a slight underlying sweetness. Incredible. Spiciness can, of course, be modified to individual taste. They have some convenient lunch specials as well. I wouldn't necessarily recommend Jincheng for a romantic dinner date location, but it should be a frequent destination for true connoisseurs of honest, authentic, delicious food.
This is lovingly- (and unfortunately, slowly) prepared food, delicious, spicy. If you want a taste of what Sichuan food tastes like, in China, come here and enjoy. However, the atmosphere of the restaurant is not in a state that will attract local return customers. The entrance area of the restaurant near the bar is allowed to be kept filthy. Dirt, grime, torn upholstery, rusted metal, used-up sticky-traps in plain view. Not appetizing. They need to attend to little details like covering the lower part of the wall with dark panels, hiding the electrical distribution board, etc. to make the place look more presentable. Also, you cannot leave a restaurant front door open in downtown Halifax and not end up with vermin of some kind or another. My suggestion would be to turn the restaurant into a 100% take-out business with a more sophisticated ordering system -- or renovate the dining area. The menu could be streamlined down to fewer options -- just offer the big stars like the excellent mapo tofu -- so the kitchen can work faster. This is really quite a good restaurant but it does not look the part. I am rooting for them and hope they will be successful.
