Contribute FeedbackThe Five Fishermen restaurant in Halifax offers a unique dining experience that has received mixed reviews. Some visitors have been disappointed with the portion sizes and value for money, while others have praised the food, service, and ambiance. Despite some complaints about slow service and high prices, many patrons have enjoyed the fresh seafood dishes and the inviting decor of the restaurant. The overall consensus seems to be that while the Five Fishermen has room for improvement in terms of portion sizes and pricing, it still offers a pleasant dining experience with excellent food options.
I came to Halifax with my 88 year old mom to see the Nova Scotia Tattoo. I only wish the food at this restaurant would have been as good as the show. Clearly the Five Fishermen need to stick to Fishing, because they sure as hell can 't cook. After reading the reviews, and really doing my homework, I thought I picked one of the Best restaurants in Halifax. If you plan to just go for a drink, the ambiance is excellent, and thanks to Emma the service was even good.....but....the chefs missed the boat Awful food at ridiculous prices (for what you get) I had the SHRIMP SAUSAGE TAGLIATELLE at $32.00...I received 5 small, overcooked shrimp, and some ground (what was supposed to be) sausage on a bed...more like a cot...of pasta...no bread....no cheese...not even salt and pepper on the table...WOW My mom got a 7oz Fillet Minion with a sparse serving of vegetables for the low price of $47.00....seriously??? Well at least it was cooked to her liking, but not the best cut of meat I 've experienced. On a positive note, the beer was cold, and our server appreciated my concerns enough to Comp my meal. Being one of the oldest restaurants in Halifax, I have to ask the question...How do you stay in business serving this ****!! Sorry if it 's harsh...but it 's reality
I remember some 15 years ago taking my wife to the Five Fishermen as a treat, and what a treat it was. The food was outstanding and the portions not overly extravagant but were still sufficient. I wish I could say the same for this most recent visit. The restaurant has had a makeover, it is very tasteful and gives one the feeling of quiet efficiency. However, in my modest opinion, the cuisine needs to be managed a little differently. Don’t get me wrong, the food was very well prepared and was tasty, but to spend $200 and still leave the table hungry is, in my view, catering to aesthetics rather than the stomach. Should you have more money than sense, by all means visit. The food is very good, the service is excellent and the décor relaxing, just be prepared to leave hungry.
A classy restaurant, with good food, but poor customer service. We (6 people) booked a table online 4 days beforehand, I requested a nice table, and rementioned this again on a confirmation call. On arrival we were early, and sat in the bar area, then when we enquired about our table at the booked time, it was not available, we waited another 20minutes, it was hard to deal with staff, seemed no-one was in charge, no real effort was made by staff, a pretty poor effort on their part
Good food, slow service. We were so excited to try this restaurant and made a reservation. We were seated on the porch right away, but no one came to our table for almost 15 minutes. I finally went and asked a server if we could get drinks and order (and we had great service after that). The meal was fine but was small in portions and quite underseasoned. The whole experience was disappointing after seeing mostly rave reviews.
Pros and cons: Very good food, but should be at those prices. Will not return. Mistakes made. Beluga lentils with halibut dish was not served even though on the menu. Regular brown lentils were served instead. I had asked about specifically about the beluga lentils, so at least tell me that the menu is incorrect for the evening. Inquired about the Shimofuri Hiratake item with the halibut and was told it was “caviar”. Didn't see the caviar in the dish and server said it was in the “sauce”. Really? Shimofuri Hiratake is not caviar, it is a mushroom. That said, the server had a delightful personality and service was good..
