After the windy road up the bare mountain in the baking heat it was lovely to arrive at this restaurant nestled in the trees. There is a large terrace as well as a good sized internal room. The menu is very simple grilled meat, potatoes, pasta very much like home cooking. Also very good value. Some of the restaurants in Gubbio would do well to try and emulate this quality! Worst customer service experience ever. If I could give this a minus score I would. We drove up the mountain in the hope of a nice lunch. We arrived at Tobio and sat down outside. There didn’t seem to be any table service so I went inside to investigate. On entering I spoke to a young man to ask for the menu, but the lady behind the bar short black hair) said that the would only start lunch at 12:30 it was 12:15). No problem I saw we will just look at the menu in advance but then she says aggressively) it will take them 30 minutes. Ok I order some drinks while we are waiting 2 sprites taken from the fridge, no glasses offered), a cappuccino and an espresso. She serves these in paper cups. When I ask for them in regular cups which are stacked on top of the coffee machine and are being used by other guests) she says ‘No she can’t do that’ as they “are too busy” see photos for how busy they are). Clearly this makes zero sense, and I’d really rather not drink my coffee from a paper cup in a restaurant. I challenge this some more and she gets increasingly aggressive and says she can’t. In the end I just take the cups myself and do it. We then left no way would we spend any more time or money) in a place with such hostile and ungracious service. Would definitely NOT recommend.
We were in Stansted airport 4 hours earlier, then sat having Lunch in the sun shine up Mount Cucco! The service was excellent as I think Ada the very good waitress could converse in English. She also was patient and helped us to choose our food.
As we haven 't eaten in Tobia before we did not know how was the quality before and had no preconceptions. Unfortunately the whole experience was a big disappointment. The antipasto of the house was nondescrip even the bread of the crostini was not toasted. Also the pasta dishes were a disappointment especially the classic Spaghetti alla Carbonara which did not have even one of its ' elementary ingredient: egg yolk. This was replaced heavy handed by black pepper. The restaurant offered cheese (Grana Padana) in a small plastic bag instead of fresh grated cheese as normally in restaurants here. While still middle of our pasta dish, the waitress interrupted us and asked what we would like to have as a dessert or would we prefer a coffee. The dessert we ordered was Crema Catalana (reminds of Creme Brulee) but what we got was whipped cream with "thin slices "of biscuits or type of baked dough used in puff pastry. The meal was cheap but it is not an excuse for the quality of this meal. During all these years we have been living in Italy and traveling all over we could remember only less than five bad experiences. Unfortunately this was one of those.
