The menu is deliberately unclear about topping prices, and that’s no accident. What looks like a €6 waffle quickly turns into a shocking bill once they start adding outrageous charges: €6 for a few slices of banana, €6 for a tiny handful of strawberries, extra fees for whipped cream, and even €1 for a dusting of powdered sugar. Misleading pricing, extremely overpriced food — ask the staff for the price before order.
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE – FOUND METAL WIRE IN FOOD DISHONEST PRICING This was an absolutely unacceptable experience. To begin with, my friend found a piece of kitchen steel wire mesh (the type used to clean dishes) inside their waffle. This is a serious food safety issue and completely unhygienic. When we informed the staff, they didn’t care at all and showed no concern about how dangerous this was. What made it worse is that they did not offer a replacement or apology and instead told us we still had to pay for it anyway. We were shocked and disgusted this alone should be enough reason to avoid this place. On top of that, the pricing was extremely dishonest. There were no clear prices shown on the menu, and when we asked, we were told there were no extra charges. However, when the bill arrived, it was a complete shock. We were charged €84 for a few waffles and toppings. The receipt shows: • Charges for basic items like sauce and powdered sugar • Extra charges added without explanation • Extremely inflated prices • No transparency at all before ordering Even ketchup and simple toppings were charged separately, which was never communicated. This feels deliberately misleading, especially towards tourists. The quality of the food did not justify the price in any way, and combined with the metal wire found in the waffle, this was one of the worst food experiences we’ve had. This place is a clear tourist trap: • Unsafe food • No price transparency • Overcharging • Shock bill at the end I’m posting this so others don’t fall into the same trap. There are far better and more honest places in Ghent to enjoy waffles. Avoid this place.
Scam Alert I had one of the worst restaurant experiences ever at The Waffle Factory in Ghent. We went specifically for waffles and were told that the sauces and toppings were included, but when the bill came, we were charged separately for every single item even ketchup, sugar, banana, strawberry, chocolate, ice cream and whipped cream, all without any clear price information or a proper menu. What makes this place even worse is the food safety issue. I actually found a piece of metal wire/iron mesh in my waffle, which is extremely dangerous and completely unacceptable in any food business. When we pointed this out, there was no apology, no concern and no attempt to make things right just a rude attitude and a full bill with all the extra charges still included. This feels like a scam: no menu with prices, misleading statements about what is included, and then an inflated bill at the end. On top of that, basic food hygiene and safety standards were clearly not met. I will never return here and I strongly advise others to avoid this restaurant for your own safety and to avoid being overcharged.
Avoid this place. We stopped in early in the morning after arriving from Brussels, thinking it would be a nice spot in this beautiful city. That assumption turned out to be a mistake we immediately regretted. They draw you in with large signs advertising €6 waffles, but that price is completely misleading. Once inside, every topping comes with an outrageous extra charge: €6 for bananas, €6 for strawberries, additional fees for whipped cream, and even €1 just for powdered sugar. What’s advertised as a €6 waffle quickly becomes ridiculously overpriced. A textbook tourist trap that felt downright deceptive. As if that wasn’t bad enough, one of my friend’s plates contained a piece of metal cleaning wire, the type used for scrubbing kitchen equipment. This is extremely concerning and totally unacceptable from a food safety standpoint. Overall, a very poor experience. Misleading pricing, overpriced food, and serious hygiene issues. Strongly not recommended.
