I have always enjoyed the superb cakes and coffee; there is a lunch menu which I have not tried. On the left bank of Geneva, the most cosmopolitan place to meet your friends. View all feedback.
What User doesn't like about La maison du Gateau:
I went here to grab a quick brunch. I was primarily looking for somewhere with A/C and wi-fi. The staff was not very nice when they realized that I am not fluent in French. I got a curt "What do you want?", then I ordered a Muesli (6.20). The muesli was good, but not very filling, so I went back for a Tartlette Epinard (4.40). I was told to sit while they warmed it, so I sat for 20 minutes and it never came. After th... View all feedback.
Only go here if you enjoy being spoken by the servants and treats like an anger / annoying child. Awful service for Bland, overpriced food. AVOID!
The ONLY reason this place is busy is because the terrace gets the sun and the 70+ year old locals that frequent this place are creatures of habit. Do not be fooled by the crowds, it's one of the worst places in Florissant/Champel. The bread...is rock hard and expensive, the lunch menu food tastes like hospital food (and is also a expensive) and the service is ridiculously slow and unfriendly. I have walked out of this place three times after waiting over 15 mins for my order (a coffee and croissant) to be taken and a further 10 mins to be served. There are three other restaurants very close on the same street that you should try before venturing across the doors of La maison du Gateau.
What a desappointment. Very noisy, cafeteria atmosphere. Very dirty toilets (at 10:15 a.m., the schedule indicated that cleaning had taken place the day before). The walls deserve a good refresh.
First visit since the overhaul. The waitress was very kind and responsive. The bread was excellent (already the same in the past). However : No more fresh juices pressed on demand. Now, it's the mini plastic bottle, maxi price (more than CHF 6 anyway) and very (very) acidic. Damage. The setting is now cold, with a multitude of small tables packed together and aligned like on a checkerboard. No more cozy little nooks. Room has been left for the large “laboratory” at the back, to the detriment of customer comfort. Damage.
Out of 3 pastries purchased, none were worth the detour: lemon meringue inedible because it was so bitter, finger tatin style edible but dry and the cloud of tiramisu worthy of a chocolate rolled biscuit in short, to be avoided especially given the prices charged (9. per pastry) If it’s a MOF it’s very BOF
