Amazing. So happy to have stumbled over this restaurant on the island. I had the fish taco plate that was fantastic. My friend had a combo plate with a Chili Relleno, a cheese enchilada, and a pig tamale all covered with amazing red and green sauces and he also loved all his food. They make their own tortilla chips, and the green salsa with which they serve them is soooo good. Please do not leave the outer fool you, the food inside is excellent.
This is the best Hispanic restaurant in Gallup. And you would never find it without help. Carlos and Cecilia cook excellently authentically well from scratches. Jamie Oliver has this restaurant in his Jamie Köche American cookbook. I would recommend the Gorditas with steak or the moose that is not on the menu. Also large tamales and the huevos rancheros divorciado are ideal for breakfast. You also have good horchata. You have no alcohol. The owners are very friendly and love children. Very recommended.
In an old adobe house that was converted to a restaurant, El Metate Tamale Factory is in an old residential neighborhood, not where you'd expect a good Mexican restaurant to be. But if you make the effort to go a bit out of the way you will agree it is totally worthwhile. We went today for the first time and will definitely be back. Best queso fundito and carnitas I've ever had.
Can't believe how cheap this place is. Spent just $11 on lunch for two. What?? Weird location in a neighborhood with no parking. But clean, friendly service, no-frills comfort food. Not much else was open when we happened upon this little establishment, but it left us satisfied and ready for the road.
