Fantastic dining experience. The place is romantic, cosy and elegant, perfect for an intimate celebration. I went several times for dinner while in our holidays and I was amazed to see how many vegetarians options they have. The quality of the food is amazing, fresh and local, and so is the taste, traditional and creative at the same time, so many flavours to try! and the owners are a lovely couple with a lot of dedication and passion for their work. I enjoyed a lot the Pinsa (a new pizza made with rice soya flour) , the soup of the day, as well as the traditional fave e foglie. Also my partner enjoyed a lot the fish dishes, particularly the crudite and gamberi viola. Desserts are great too, particularly the tiramisu. We would definitely come back and recommended for anyone looking for a romantic and quiet place where to have dinner or host their anniversary.
We chose Matre as it was placed high on TripAdviser. Unlike many eateries in the Old Town it does not have seating out on the street but rather has plenty inside and also a nice inner courtyard. Surprisingly, we were the only diners which means we had the courtyard to ourselves under a lemon tree. We both went straight for Primi Piatti rather than Anti Pasta, I had the swordfish ravioli which had an unusual but delicious orange sauce and Himself had the orecchiette dish, a delicious hearty dish that would be a excellent mains dish in its own. Eating a bowl of this on a winters evening would be perfect. For Secondi the meat bombette with crisp like fries was quite good and the breaded John Dory (St Peter fish) was nice but both dishes lacked substance. Like most establishments in Puglia Matre is good value for the good quality. Matre suffers from not having on-street dining which fails to attract the main clientele which are tourists. Give it a chance and seek out the intimate courtyard all the way in the back. Recommended.
