Snack O Pico - Funchal

O melhor snack-bar nas nossas férias na Madeira. Por acaso parámos aqui para tomar um café depois do nascer do sol no Pico do Arieiro. O café estava muito saboroso, a vista sobre o Funchal era muito impressionante e o proprietário era muito simpático e divertido. E escandalosamente barato. Se viajarmos novamente para a Madeira, voltaremos.

Sanduíches muito saborosos por pouco dinheiro. A comida é mais barata do que vale. Nós demos gorjeta em conformidade.

This is off the beaten track and it good for both locals and visitors. We had a couple of beers, while looking at the view, and the owner brought us a complimentary plate of nibbles. Friendly service

Firstly the view is spectacular and watching the sleds go down the hill from a distance adds to the experience. Polite friendly owner who offered alternatives when our choice wasn't available. Enjoyed the freshly made scabbard fish in a light herb batter served in a roll. Hit the spot after an 18k walk.

Most tourists seem to congregate around the tropical gardens that you pay to enter. We didn't do that on our second trip to Monte. This time we wandered through Parque do Monte which is free and we carried on up the road towards the base of Quinta Jardins do Emperador. This is where we found Bar O Pico. Paul served us with a lovely cold beer and we sat in the the room with big windows. We'd been there 5 minutes before we realised you can open the windows to give unrestricted spectacular views of the mountainside and Funchal in the distance. It was fascinating talking to Paul too and I hope more customers visit him. He's hoping the emperor's gardens will be restored with a gate near to his bar to give him more business. I hope so too because he deserves it for being so friendly, knowledgeable and a brilliant host. Thanks Paul!
