We enjoyed the food there every time but was upset when they were closed over Christmas. They sure deserve the break but we missed eating there, such a friendly ,homely place, we just loved it.
We had our first meal in Funchal here, as it was right across from our hotel. It was lunch time, and we had sandwiches. We found them to be quite dry and not very interesting. Their evening menu looked more promising, maybe we should have given them a second chance. Service was good and friendly.
We found this cafe by accident god food and drinks very cheap,we had a couple of Madeira bread sandwiches very good and good value.
Mekafe is wonderful! It was always nice and peaceful as most people used the outside cafes but Mekafe is tucked away inside the shopping centre under the Eden Mar Hotel. The owner, Jose Carlos looked after us well, we visited several times during our holiday and we even got introduced to his wife, daughters and grandchildren. It’s a simple café, good quality food but at more reasonable prices than the restaurants outside. The perfect place to go if you want friendly service, a good snack and a nice place out of the heat. The omelettes were particularly tasty and Jose Carlos always set the table so professionally giving better personal service than some of the more expensive restaurants close by. If we ever return, we shall visit Mekafe again.
We have visited Mekafe on a previous holiday and hoped that it was still open. The food is freshly cooked to order and is very tasty: I sampled the pork with mushrooms, fish and chips, chicken breast and the ham and cheese omelette, and all were of the same high standard. We have also tried the home-made desserts which are delicious. The prices are very reasonable, which is what drew us in on the first occasion, but now we go back because of the food and the very friendly service. Mekafe is family owned and run and on this trip we even met the youngest family member, 4 month old Salvador! Mekafe is not on the main road, it is in the small shopping centre opposite the Gorgulho Hotel (back from Pingo Doce), but very well worth seeking out.
