Was Carol W at Gypsy Tapas House a mag?
This was our first visit under the new management loved the extended space, live music and great courtyard vibe. We were really impressed with the new (improved) menu the mushroom dip, fish and prawn cakes and duck pithiviers were particularly tasty, and even the old staple patatas bravas was taken to a new level same with the chorizo which now comes with delicious cabbage and apple compote. Friendly service with lot... View all feedback.
What NewZealandKiwiontour dislikes about Gypsy Tapas House:
Was hoping for more. Came years ago when it was smaller and I feel back then it’s menu was more exciting. The flavours this time were ok but not “wow”. Also felt like the service for brining food out for two sets of set menus was very disjointed, with one pair always one dish ahead and then a dish being forgotten or missed. Cold venue. Heaters outside but inside cold. Cute decor but more a warm weather venue View all feedback.
This place has a great vibe- it has quirky furniture, you can sit outside, there is live music, friendly staff but I don't think their food is that great. It's simple tapas for reasonable price but their Turkish bread with hommus or broccomole was quite plain and bread quite dry. Fried ravioli was ok but a little bit burnt, their chicken was probably the best dish. I think overall it's a good spot for cheap tapas.
The live music is so different every time I go and this creates a unique atmosphere to everywhere else in Freo - I always go with an open mind. The owners are highly considerate of the restaurant atmosphere and have on occasion asked the bands to tone it down to allow patrons to hear each other better. Well priced tasty menu, plenty of options and a great spot to go w/ my vegetarian or vegan friends, certain there'll be plenty of choice for them. Often served by the owners or equally as friendly staff who come from a range of backgrounds, never had an issue with service. If you like to eat out at vibrant, interesting and energetic places I highly recommend Gypsy.
We were a large, last-minute group who were accommodated after a bit of table moving. The restaurant was flat-out but this added to the atmosphere. We selected a range of dishes and all were excellent. I'd skip the sangria next time though.
