Reviews - Matsutake Sushi Steak
Reviews summary
Matsutake offers a mixed dining experience that leaves some patrons underwhelmed. While the food and chef receive praise, service issues cast a shadow over the overall visit. Guests report long wait times and disorganization, particularly regarding reservations. Rude interactions with staff, including the owner, have led to feelings of embarrassment during special occasions. Additionally, birthday celebrations go unacknowledged, leaving diners feeling undervalued. Despite the culinary talents showcased, the inconsistency in service and management makes it difficult for many to recommend Matsutake wholeheartedly. Prospective diners should weigh these factors when considering their next reservation.

This is the 4th time we have eaten here over a period of three years and it has really changed for the worse. My mother is Japanese and I eaten her cooking and at dozens of Japanese restaurants over my lifetime and I can honestly say this is the worst cooking. My question is, Who is in the kitchen? If it is a Japanese chef...shame on you. The chicken tempura I ordered a month ago was like giant mishapened chicken tenders in a thick pancake batter. Tempura should be light and airy and not dark from frying. Each piece was inconsistent from the next, not like beautiful Japanese portions that are similar and of the same size. Why did we come back today. The mushroom soup was tasteless. The hibachi chicken and steak was overcooked til both meats were dry. The size of the chunks varied from scrap like to about 1 inch wide, and the medium requested steak was like a leftover steak cut up for your four year-old to eat. It had fat throughout the steak pieces which should have been trimmed off. The mushrooms, broccoli, onions literally were like from leftovers from someone 's plate...and lastly...the white rice was undercooked. I don 't know who is in the kitchen...but I extredoubt that it is a Japanese chef. A true Japanese chef with have pride in what they do and make. Japanese food is an art...trust me, you won 't find traditional, quality, appetizing food at Matasuke. And on top of everything...the service is poor. I 've learned my final lesson and wasted my last $50 lunch. My daughter and I should have just gone to Poke Bowl.
I have been coming here for years and believe it is the best sushi in frederick. Great prices and pieces are very fresh.
The food and show was great! Chef Bobby was outstanding...very funny and entertaining!!! We will back!!!
I ordered a large order of take out today. Everything from presentation to taste was horrible. The chicken katsu wasn't even cooked all the way through. The chef obviously has no skill. This places togo food has really went down hill in the past year.

My daughters birthday was never acknowledged even though I wrote in the notes of OpenTable. We told the waitress but still nothing happened. The chef was amazing though
Very good. The experience is exactly what we expected due to previous visits to Matsutaki. The chef was great, however this time the waitress seemed to be off her game.
Food tasted great and servers were nice, but it took WAAAY too long for a chef to come out and start cooking. If you take kids, take a snack or something for them to do, bc its too long for kids to wait.
We had a disappointing experience at this restaurant. When we arrived for our reservation, the host—who turned out to be the owner or manager—said that our reservation was marked as "open table." He was quite rude, even going so far as to suggest that we should make our reservation on OpenTable. He mentioned that they had been trying to take a break for months and that our reservation was causing them problems. He claimed they were unaware of our reservation and would "try" to seat us soon. He also implied that I should have reached out to confirm our reservation. This was especially upsetting since it was my birthday dinner, and I felt embarrassed by the whole situation. We ended up leaving without dining there, which was disappointing as we have never had a negative experience when using OpenTable before. Needless to say, we will continue to use OpenTable but will not be returning to Matsutake.

My family and I have been here multiple times and have never had a bad experience. Today was no exception. The hostess was friendly and greeted us with a smile. We were seated quickly and promptly (Thursday evening). The teppanyaki chef was exceptional. He engaged with my whole family and genuinely seemed to enjoy what he was doing. The food was prepared perfectly and tasted amazing. Their prices are fair and standard...$25-$35. I will note, their child portions are
Great place for special occasions or if you want a different eating experience, chef cooks in front of you. They give lots of rice and noodles. Fried rice cost extra but worth getting in my opinion otherwise you get only white rice.
Had dinner last night at Matsutake in Frederick. We all loved our meals and the experience was very nice. We will return for another enjoyable evening in the future. Give it a try!
The last 3 times I've called over and over for 20 minutes while driving home with my sushi-loving toddler and no one answered, the 3rd time I placed my order online because I wasn't driving and when I went in, it wasn't busy so I'm not sure why they dont pick up their phones? When I got home I saw that the rice was super wet and turned to mush when we tried scooping it out. Sadly we won't be trying to order here anymore.

Made the reservation but still had to wait for a table for 15 minutes. Other than that, the experience was very good.
Looks like they do not take open table reservations because when we got there we were informed that they did not accept them anymore. Fortunately, we were seated right away (even though there was a wait)
We arrived for our 8:00 PM reservation for six on a Saturday night and were informed that they no longer accept OpenTable reservations and are trying to remove themselves from the platform. Fortunately, they were kind enough to honor our reservation and seated us promptly, but keep in mind this may not be the case going forward.
I had the most entertaining hibachi chef! The food was delicious, and the matsutake shrimp stood out as particularly good and unique!

I've been here twice, the first time it was a bit sub-par. Not bad, but not great. The first time was early on a Tuesday night, so imagine they're not at...
The concept of a Japanese Steakhouse is the show. Matsutake delivers a great show! I watched a couple of other tables while waiting for our show, and in...
